Trying to figure out somethin' to sell on E-bay - is going to garage sales, storage auctions, etc the best way to inventory product? ideas?

Nope, did that, not profitable, and it is a lot of work. The best thing to sell on ebay is to either have a product that you can buy at a great discount, one that you make yourself, or in my case, I have found that selling digital products (ebooks) is the easiest and most profitable. No inventory, and very little work.

That is what alot of people do, I know of one woman that averages 12000 a month between doing this and going through the clearance racks at clothing stores all the time. she said there is a big market for American clothing and alot of foreign buyers for in.

Peopl eusually sell stuff they own personally or off of distibutors' shelves. http://ewebproducts.com has some heavily discounted things under Discount stores.
