I'm thinking about putting dreads into my nipple-length hair, as it is a pain to deal with, as I really only have the time to wash it once a week or so. I'm uncomfortable with the idea, as I have never lived through 'dread' - no-one has ever put me or my middle-class white family through slavery. I currently live under military occupation in the West Bank, which is a bit different, but should I be concerned about my potential to undermine the heritage of cultural resistance by styling my hair into a symbol of endurance for black people through slavery? Or is this very question so bourgeois that I'm about to disappear up my own backside in a puff of leftist idealism?
