first off: how can you call yourself goth and not know what it is?? that's like calling yourself a musician but never playing an instrument.
now, goth is a contemporary subculture that began in the in the UK in the late 1970s to early 1980s, in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. the term "goth" is a reference to gothic literature, which was very dark and horriffic. (lol. i like this crap)
many goths wear black, though there are some who like colors and even a few who are "anti-goths" who wear all white. it's rather beautiful, when done correctly.
i could go on forever, but i'd rather not right now. if you have any more questions, email me. i'll answer them when i have more time.

Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. Goths tend to be kind, intelligent, non-violent, emotional, and artistic.

The Goths were an East Germanic tribe who are belived to have left Scandinavia in the 1st century AD, initially settled in present-day Poland, and by the and of the 2nd century expanded to a large part of Eastern Europe. Goths were one of the first "barbaric" groups to successfully invade the Roman Empire.
The "Goth" subculture started in the UK as an offshoot of post-punk. In the UK, there were several post-punk bands that were called "gothic" in the late 1970s (opinions differ as to how the word "gothic" became associated with post-punk). In the early 1980s, gothic rock became its own subgenre within post-punk, and followers of gothic rock bands started to come together as a distinctly recognizable movement. The movement further solidified with the opening of the Batcave club in London in July 1982, which has become the primary "Gothic" stomping ground...

goth does not mean, wearing all black like people think, or wearing black make up either. gothic style is like a type of style like victorian, or something it can describe a rooms decor, an outfit, or a way of being, you said you are goth, then you must dress in dark colors and have a dark sence of style of personality. it can have a wide range actually what falls into the goth category.

Well, stereotypically, "goth" or "gothic" can mean someone who wears all black and associates with death, Satan, etc.
However, the actual meaning comes from medieval times in Europe, when there was a time I believe [not positive about name] called the Gothic Period, during the Dark Era. There was no learning, and people wore dark clothing.
You can still visit the Gothic castles in Europe today.
