I'm thinking about putting dreads into my nipple-length hair, as it is a pain to deal with, as I really only have the time to wash it once a week or so. I'm uncomfortable with the idea, as I have never lived through 'dread' - no-one has ever put me or my middle-class white family through slavery. I currently live under military occupation in the West Bank, which is a bit different, but should I be concerned about my potential to undermine the heritage of cultural resistance by styling my hair into a symbol of endurance for black people through slavery? Or is this very question so bourgeois that I'm about to disappear up my own backside in a puff of leftist idealism?

Yes, dreads are a symbol to some. Yes, dreads represent something spiritual for some. However, to many, dreads are just a hairstyle. For many, it is a convenient style (though maintaining them neatly does require some work).

If you got dreads, sure some may think that you are trying to be black. To that, so what, it is just a hairstyle. It is not disrespectful to a race by wearing your hair that way. Disrespectful would be if you put a sheet over you head and called yourself KKK. Disrespect comes from hateful actions; your hairstyle is not a hateful action.

I'm mixed with different African descents and White among other things and I think that hair and race shouldn't have too much to do with each other. Although the only problem I see with people who aren't Black getting dreads is that they usually don't stay and it makes their hair look that much worse to people who don't like dreads. Most White people I see after a while end up looking like terrier dogs and I have one so I should know. But if that's what you like and you have a curly/frizzy texture you shouldn't have a problem no matter what anyone says.

I would have to go with the idealism. You are thinking way too much into this. As long as you keep them tight dreads will be cool. Just don't walk around thinking that because you have dreads you share some sort of kinship with black people.

I know a few white people (male and female) who have dread and they've never had any problems with people thinking it's a racial thing - can look really good as well!

first of all i could like to assert i'm sorry in case you have suffered decrease than any racial tension whether that's replaced into brought about by utilising a black or the different individual. Racism is incorrect. Blacks and the Media. with the intention to realize it you are able to desire to get your information directly. whilst it incorporates black television and how specific characters are performed various the time that's in keeping with a black stereotype perpetrated by utilising money starvation organisation executives (being black or white) who sense that an precise depiction of blacks isn't that worthwhile. in the present day the photos of 'blacks interior the hood' is basically yet another stereotype, same as Jim Crow and Sambo. you comprehend that no longer all black adult adult males run around merchandising drugs and dishonest on their different halves and girlfriends. Nor do all black females get pregnant at sixteen. those are stereotypes Hollywood use persons to make money. they think of blacks often being portrayed this way is extra worthwhile than offering him because of the fact the all American black boy around the corner. And the reason Tyler Perry use lines like "We as African people" or" Too many black youths" in his tutor to tension especially to blacks specific themes that are obligatory to our community. Black place fashions. the reason we are saying we want black place fashions is using the fact various the time whilst we seem in places of authority and prosperity we don't usually see a coloured face. that's a white one. we want somebody who sounds like us to mirror fulfillment and opportunities comparable to you do. The Race Card. the reason the race card is thrown obtainable is using the fact everybody remains racist and discriminatory against people of colour. some persons could desire to nonetheless sense you owe us because of this reason. We sense cheated and each and every time we see an develop in hate crimes (and it has risen) we sense threatened and previous wounds are unfold out back. Racism hasn't died and that's no longer previous information. Slavery is ineffective, yet do no longer you fool your self into thinking racism is. Frankly Jarius, i think of you have been a brave individual to invite those questions and that i applaud you on your openness and honesty and attempting understand why we sense the way we do. i think of one way of ridding ourselves of the curse of racism is to open up a trustworthy communicate approximately it and then attempt to discover a thank you to heal.
