I like John Saul, but I read The Devil's Labyrinth and thought it was terrible. It's almost like he wasn't really even trying. Maybe he's tapped out of ideas!

I have a question regarding the setting of the combat as described in 1 Samual 17 David and Goliath.

How does the description of the setting heighten the drama of this one of one combat between David and Goliath?

I love The Uglies Trilogy, Eragon/Eldest, Inkspell, A Great And Terrible Beauty, Harry Potter, Redwall, etc. Please recommend a fantasy or science fiction or a really good series or trilogy or whatever for me. After many years in the adult world, I am taking an online writing course. I realized the other day, that I do not have a clear understanding of conflict in literature. I've tried dissecting the books I've read recently, and I'm not doing so well with it. Can you please help me to understand what the actual conflict is in these books? (Any or all)

Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)

Harry Potter 1 through 7 (J K Rowling)

Twilight, New Moon & Eclipse (Stephenie Meyers)

Where the Wild Things Are (Maurice Sendak)

Thanks! Your help is sincerely appreciated!

I posed a question yesterday about Janet and John books, and somebody mentioned they didnt use them at school, but used the Beacon reader books.

Something in that title prodded a memory, and im now trying to remember the content,as i must have had them at school too,as the familar title just sparked something.

Danged if i remember the book much.

Can anyone enlighten me?
I guess they were talking about the 50`s 60`s 70` time range.

I was at infants school in late 60`s early 70`s.

I am very intrigued, and cannot get the impression i read them too out of my head.

Oh,and i remember the ladybird books too,i saw tons of them in a old shop in yorkshire last week, really old ones.

They bought back some good memories.
I collect old childrens books, especially school ones, and am always looking for new ones.

I guess it reminds me of more innocent times, and in the harsh world we live in,i think a bit of re-living happier times just makes us smile and feel better.

I believe these forms are higly creative ( although they can also be highly copied so is regular fiction ). I can site many works that are equal or superior to mainstream fiction or classics. For instance you would be hard pressed to find a work more with the depth and breadth of Lord of the Rings in mainstream genres.

Your thoughts on this.

I currently write a little for Associated Content. I would like to make a go writing freelance articles like this full time. Does anyone know of other sites like Associated Content that pay a little more per article. I don't mind if it's on specific topics as long as I know I'll get paid. Thanks in advance for any ideas and sites.

I have a degree in creative writing from a top university, but still have no significant credits yet. How should I go about getting published in a reputable magazine or web site for the first time? Is self-publishing the way to go? I have short stories that are done, but I am not sure where to send them. I know I need an agent, but trying to get one without ever being published just isn't going to happen. Any suggestions?

I have two very old books. I have been searching for more then a year to find a place to take them to find their value. They are both published by Belford & Clark Co. One is Miltons Poems - 1886 I don't know if that was the copyright date or the print date. The other is Scott's Poems and there is no date on this one. It just says Preface to first edition. I had another but my son got into it and ripped it all up. (I thank my husband for having SUCH a close eye on him while I was gone) Please help I find all kinds of books but none of them look like the ones I have....oh yeah and they are in MINT condition.....as far as I can tell and I am no expert.
