I have two very old books. I have been searching for more then a year to find a place to take them to find their value. They are both published by Belford & Clark Co. One is Miltons Poems - 1886 I don't know if that was the copyright date or the print date. The other is Scott's Poems and there is no date on this one. It just says Preface to first edition. I had another but my son got into it and ripped it all up. (I thank my husband for having SUCH a close eye on him while I was gone) Please help I find all kinds of books but none of them look like the ones I have....oh yeah and they are in MINT condition.....as far as I can tell and I am no expert.

Several years ago we had a death in the family. The person had a lot of stuff, and we hired professional appraisers to value some of it. Can't give one relative a plate worth $5 and another one a figurine worth $500, right?

We were dismayed at the value of old books. These were in good shape, fully readable, many of classics still in print, and the appraiser averaged them at $3 each, adding, "Although that's generous. Most, you couldn't get even $2 for."

About all you can do is to keep an eye on antique books on ebay and see what others sell for, over a period of several months at least.

In the end, they'll probably be worth more to you to have than you could sell them for.

well you can take comfort in that very old books will not deteriorate because of acid paper.
