You might want to try Decipher by Stel Pavlou. When I read the prologue it said Mankind has had twelve thousand years to break this code, they only have one week left before the end of the world. Good book. But what really interested me was when I finished the book. You know that at the end of some books, the authors put a list of places and people they researched in order to write their book? Well at the end of this one there is five pages of different places that Stel Pavlou used. Even those are interesting reading. Have fun and enjoy!

"Empty World" by John Christopher has a similar set-up to The Stand. It's also an easier and much shorter read.
If you like that one, you might give some of his other books a try. Christopher has written several books that have the "worldwide disaster" premise. His books tend to be targeted to the teen audience, but don't look past Christoper just because of that. His books are pretty good on their own merits, and, unlike a lot of Stephen King books, they don't take two weeks to finish. :-)

The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton.
he's a really awesome writer.
Also have you read the Langoliers? That's King as well, and though it's not a virus, it's way cool.

I know that there are other similarly themed ones out there, but can't think of them at the moment.
However, you might want to try Nevil Shute's On the Beach. Excellent end of the world novel, with nuclear weapons being the culprit.
