Maybe Wind in the Willows? Not as surreal as Alice, but it's a children's classic from the same era. Roald Dahl has a lot of good books for children and adults. Neil Gaiman's a good idea too, and Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. You might also like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. It's about magicians in a kind of alternate-history Regency England. I thought Alice Through the Needle's Eye was not that great; I wouldn't spend any serious amount of time or money trying to get a copy.
