I have read Michener's books many many times over. I need some new reading material with the same depth of historical background information wrapped around fiction. Who do you suggest and why?

I read it in an Intro to Poetry class, in our textbook, back around 1989, but I think the poem was older, maybe from the 60's or further back? It was mid-length (not short, not long) and about how this guy did everything he was told, never complained, never questioned the system. It implies that he liked the way things were in the world because he never spoke up, he never said otherwise. The idea of the poem was that you've got to speak up if you want to change things. I *think* the last line was "If he was unhappy, we would have heard" or something like that - but I've googled several combinations of possible words and haven't found it. Does it ring a bell for anyone? I'm thinking it has to be a pretty well-known poem, because it was in a book with things like "Ozymandias" by Shelley and "Stopping by woods on a snowy evening" by Frost.

Someone told me about a book. It had Sherlock Holmes and possibly some other literary characters in it. They had a magic umbrella that takes you to the place you're thinking about when you open it. For example, Flatland.

Does anyone know the title of this book?

I know the exposition in a story is like background information and stuff but in the book A Tree Grows In Brooklyn would it things about where Francie lives and stuff, and does it include her family's background that we find out later. (you know the one about the Rommely family and Nolan family and how her parents met?)

Your responses are appreciated and thanks once again

I told my husband I would cut back on the amount of books I would read this year. (I read 50 last year, which I don't think is that much) Like a dummy, I said I would only read 1 book a month, so I need to make it a good one. Which one should I read this month? I like pretty much anything, except for romance novels!

I recently read an article by Mr. Jayant Narlikar (famous Indian astrophysicist) where the author gave an overview of the writings of H G Wells, Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury and said that bad science fiction is the one which creates irrational fear of science among readers and takes irresponsibly big liberties.

While, good sci-fi paves the path for new scientific explorations.

I guess, you have to take certain liberties with science fiction and you have to write about fancy stuff like anti-gravity, faster-than-light spaceships etc.

My question is, how do you draw the line?
And what exactly should a good science fiction writer do?

Any suggested readings?
