I don't know if you mean about or by or what age group we're talking about, but Tears of a Tiger by Sharon M. Draper LOOKS great. I say looks (I've done some serious skimming), because I sell on-line, and when I've had a copy of this book, it sells immediately. It's about a high school basketball player that drinks and drives and the consequences he has to face after.
Walter Dean Myers is excellent, too. I read Monster and know I've picked up others of his that have been great.
What about Roll of Cry Hear My Thunder by Mildred Taylor? I found it very moving.

do you mean by african americans, or about african americans? In either case, I think Maya Angelou is currently the most celebrated author around in this country, and she's a woman to boot.

The poet Sapphire wrote a novel called 'Push' that is quite amazing. It is written phonetically from the point of view of an illiterate african-american girl who is learning to read. It is a really inspiring read to see the character who surpasses all her difficulties.

-Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neal Hurston
-Anything by Toni Morrison, although Sula is the only one I've read
-Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison. This is not about a man who is actually invisible, that's a different story.

Zora Neale Hurston wrote some cool stuff...she has cool stories about her local life in Florida, her times in NYC, and her interests in Jamaican culture and identity. I don't have titles in mind because I haven't read her stuff in years but its good.
