What is your favorite Jane Austen book and why? What is your favorite Character from that book and why? Do you have a favorite excerpt from that book/ Character?

Mine is Lizzy from Pride & Prejudice because she is strong minded willful and refused to marry for anything less then love!

My favorite excerpt from the book is:

"I do, I do like him,'' she replied, with tears in her eyes, "I love him. Indeed he has no improper pride. He is perfectly amiable." (Jane Austen/ Lizzy Pride & prejudice)

With all the work that has been done on the benefits of optimism and the disadvantages of pessimism, when you ask WHY should I be optimistic, you always get the same answers.

"you should be optimistic because you'll accomplish more"
"because you'll likely be healthier"
"because people will like you more"

But if you ask WHY you should CARE if you are healthier, if people like you, or if you accomplish anything, they are pretty much left with one answer "because it feels good". Now that I can relate to, because the only thing that really matters to me in life is how I feel from moment to moment. Everything else is just a means to an end of how I believe it will make me feel.

But go to a morgue and look at a corpse...rotting, discolored, quickly turning to a squishy pile of mush. Does it matter now how accomplished that person was, or healthy, or popular, or happy? And I'm not saying there's no afterlife, but who knows, who cares?

How do you find out your Vocal Range?

If there is a truly omnipotent deity, who by that definition is all knowing and all powerful, why would it need to create a race of beings (such as ourselves) to 'serve him' and to 'spread his word' and live life a certain way to be able to live in a paradise at the end of your earthly life (or after 'judgement day', etc.)?
What do you suppose is the purpose of creating life only to struggle and suffer as much of the world does? If this deity knows how it will all turn out anyway, what is the point? Does it seem unusual that a deity of that nature would be so far above us that there's no way we'd be really necessary for it to create us as mere mortals?

she says that i'm not as successful and smart as he is. she wishes that i have some traits of my brother in me. she said my cousins are faster leaners than i am, because it took them a month to learn something that takes me a year to learn. is this another way mothers use to encourage their children to work harder? i don't understand my mother most of the time.

This is what I am surprised to learn.

Why is it some people today still feel it was unjust for the US to drop the first atomic bomb on Japan? They feel it was cruel and barbaric. This is especially so if they are Japanese. These people even feel the US SHOULD apologise!

However, why didn't these people think of the events that led to these bombings? Pearl Habour, Nanking, Hong Kong, Singapore, Darwin or Brisbane? Weren't these MORE cruel?

If the Japanese had refrained bombing Pearl Harbour, wouldn't the outcome had been very different? The US would not even enter the war!

Wasn't the late Paul Tibbets correct? He refused to apologised and he had no regrets.
