I do not want to continue to support financially or emotionally my family. They have for the last 27 years taken all that I have , money, advice etc. yet they all resent me . They all say " You think you know everything" "Why should anyone listen to you" Yet I am the one that has taken extra work to support them (when I could work..I am disabled now) paid mortages, rents, child support for my brothers, childcare,taken in their grandchildren to live with me, paid for groceries .utilities, you name I have done it for the LORD. I want to stop!! Have I let GOD down.? I am a discalced Carmelite Secular. What do you think? I feel guilty and ashamed for not wanting to continue

(just posted this in psychology, reposting here)

When was the last time you did something that benefited others, while knowingly causing you more pain than pleasure? In other words, what was the last thing you did that was truly self-sacrificial?

Keep in mind that the following do not count as altruistic actions:

1) Helping someone else because it helps you (obviously)

2) Helping someone else that may have harmed you, but brought you recognition for your actions (sometimes, people do good things for others, but only because they want to be seen as a good person)

3) Helping someone else because it made you feel good about yourself (sometimes we help others out of guilt, or the fear of feeling like a bad person; these may seem like altruistic actions, but you still benefit in the long run, so they are not truly self-sacrificial)

So when was the last time you hurt yourself to help others, and didn't do it for any selfish reason? Or is such an act even possible?

I have a history assingment and one of the things the teacher asked us to do was compare a set of dates to another similar date in history. One of them is, I need to find a date similar to the battle of Antietam, I cannot think of any. Anyone got ideas?

I have been doing a personal study on people's fears and how far-reaching they can be on a societal level. I'm curious. Does fear making people judgmental? Or is it the other way around?
