What I find striking about the style includes those sections where Steinbeck stops focusing specifically on the Joads and their circle and generalizes so that the novel applies to everyone who was dispossessed during the depression and Dust Bowl eras.
I greatly admire Steinbeck's writing.

John Steinbeck is one of my favorite old time writers.
He really told the story in a way anyone could understand the life of people during the depression. Everyone rich and poor alike were affected by the crash. Hard working people, who had lost everything, but still had hope and self respect.
Familys were pulled apart and forced to become the gypies of the road, to find work. They were at the mercy of employers, and law men of the time.
I feel Steinbeck had great feelings about everything that was going on and and the little people it affected.

1.)Like Steinbeck's style here; like it in all his books!
2.)Because it fit the story of back-country Oklahoma just-folks, who make a very difficult journey to what they heard was a 'promised land,' or at least a land that was promising. They came from dust-bowl country; I've lived there and know what that was all about, including their colloquialisms.
(It's odd that I DID live there; it was #1 on my list of places to never even visit!...) I've lived in CA wine country, too.
The family was ripe for the picking, just like the grapes you say tell the whole story... but you'd have to read the story to know that...
Unless perhaps you're familiar already with the depression era movement west, and with what greeted most of those who made the move.
Good luck on your project.

Steinbeck was compelled to write this book by actual eyewitness accounts. I think the book has received so much attention because Steinbeck is just being brutally honest. - and truly believes in what he is writing. I personally like this writing style. It makes the subject matter seem even more real.

The style was realist. I am a fan of the realists. He has a point to make about exploitation of the poor by those in power, but rather than preaching, he lets events and actions of his characters make his point for him. I liked the book a lot. Those who don't like it might dislike reading about poor people, or perhaps they just don't like reading at all.
