I know that George Washington was the first president of the United States of America but who was the first person to lead before the Declaration of Independence was written?

John Hancock was President of the Continental Congress so I would probably go with him

I would have to go with Benjamen Franklyn. He was an ambassador to England and to France. He tried for years to intercede for the colonies before the King. He was instrumental in bringing France into the Revolutionary Wars on the side of the colonies, we know the French were late in coming but, they came with full force and their Navy, which broke the British blockade.
