George Washington was born in Westmoreland County in Virginia on Feb. 22, 1732. Little is known of his early childhood. He started school in Fredericksberg, Virginia about the age of 6 or 7. He stayed in school until about 15. His favorite subject was arithmetic. But he was also fond of history and geography. At 21 he inherited the family farm at Ferry Farm. Besides running a plantation he became a surveyor (1747-1752). He served in the French and Indian War as a lieutenant colonel under the British General Braddock. He saw military action in the. He had to surrender Fort Necessary to the French. After the war he returned to plantation life. Later in 1775 the Continental Congress appointed Washington as commander in chief of the Continental army. One great achievement was that he kept his ragged army together by usually avoiding direct battle with the larger and better trained British. His army was short of everything. However, he did win battles at Trenton, Princeton and finally Yorktown. After the Revolutionary War he was chosen to preside over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. He became the first president of the new United states. Three new states joined the U.S. during his time in office. He chose capable men to head his cabinet: Jay, Hamilton, Jefferson, Knox, Randolph. He signed the bill setting up the First Bank of the U.S. He put down the Whisky Rebellion in western Pennsylvania. After his terms as President he retired to his plantation at Mt. Vernon.
