Southern Sunrise
Color of lemon, mango, peach,
These storybook villas
Still dream behind
Shutters, thier balconies
Fine as hand-
Made lace, or a leaf-and-flower pen-sketch.
Tilting with the winds,
On arrowy stems,
Pineapple-barked,
A green crescent of palms
Sends up its forked
Firework of fronds.
A quartz-clear dawn
Inch by bright inch
Gilds all our Avenue,
And out of the blue drench
Of Angels' Bay
Rises the round red watermelon sun.
--> It was written in 1856.
I think it's just a romantisized depiction of the sunset. It makes everything seem delicate(?). Whereas in the North, everything was factories, the south still retained it's natural beauty according to the poet. I think it's another version of books depicting southern life as sophisticated, that came out around the civil war era.

I'm not quite sure how to explain this, but I'll try my best.

For more than a decade, for waayy more than half my life...I dedicated my time to soccer. Being born in a Latin American country, my love for the sport was fostered in me at a very young age. I practiced countless hours and probably ran thousands of miles to be able to compete at the highest level possible. I began to finally reap the rewards of my hard work about a year ago when I landed a spot on an excellent team that would surely give me the last push I needed to play in college.

Then my mom made me quit. She refused to pay the fees. Give me rides. Sign the papers (being a minor, I can't play w/o her consent). I was going somewhere with the one thing I loved the most...and she brutally took it away from me.

I could still play high school soccer but something feels sooo off. The love...the passion...it's gone. I never thought that would be possible.

Anybody relate? What happens now?

I plan to read a novel from every country. Which books are most worthwhile, both as a means to gain the truest insight into the soul of each land, and also from a literary standpoint?

I have a long-term ambition to read one literary novel, in English, from (almost) all of the nations on earth. For years, the books I've read have been written, almost exclusively, by white, upper-middle-class American and British authors. I want to expand the breadth of this reading dramatically. I cannot name a single writer or novel from Mongolia, Indonesia, Somalia, Morocco, Brazil, etc etc, much less any of the literary gems from these countries.

So: which single novel from each nation is most revealing of the lifestyle, customs, struggles, history and national spirit of that country? I'm from the Indian subcontinent, so I'd nominate Rohinton Mistry's 'A Fine Balance'.
