I was wondering if there were any resources (preferably books) that go over the basics of filmmaking.

Take a film class! Taking an actual class and actually WATCHING movies is a lot funner (yes, funner), and probably a much more effective way to learn about the MANY many aspects of film. You can watch films that exemplify the processes, styles, and techniques of film-making, and you get to watch a bunch of good movies for free!

You could probably be admitted as a special student at a local college (if you're not already in college) and try to get into a film class, or you could go to your local college bookstore, where there will likely be an intro to film book.

This is the book we used in my class:
http://www.amazon.com/Film-Critical-Introduction-Maria-Pramaggiore/dp/0205518699/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-3522836-9950423?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1187224813&sr=8-1
It's pretty new, but it's really good.

To answer your question I must first ask you a question. What aspect of film making are you interested in? You can be a Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Cameramen, Electrician, Actor etc. The list can go on for ever. But if you want to get a general idea I would suggest you look for a bookstore called "French Samuel bookstore" you can google it and buy books on line.
If you don't know yet what aspect of film making you are interested in. I would suggest finding a book with an overall view of film making.

Hon, filmmaking is "hands-on," it isn't math or English, where you learn it in a book.

You need to know the basics, by attending a filmmaking courses.

Most Universities have filmmaking classes.
