There are 3 ways to join -

1. Get a principal or leading role in a SAG film under a SAG contract. You must join immediately in this case.

2. Being an extra - get 3 union vouchers working as a SAG extra. This is the most common way, but it can take a while.

3. Through the 'sister" organizations - if you are a member of AFTRA or Equity and have performed in a principal role under one of those contracts, you can join SAG (and vice versa for the other unions. I know Equity people who get their SAG card this wasy never having worked on a film and there are film/tv stars who can get their Equity card this way without having to go through the EMC program).

The comment about being in a right-to-work state and just paying your dues is false.

Check out www.sag.org for further information and clarification.

*NOTE* about newyorkGAL's answer!

She keeps giving false answers regarding "Right-To-Work" laws.

"RIGHT TO WORK" laws pertain only to whether a person MUST join a union. It DOES NOT mean that you can walk into a SAG office in one of those states and just join. The membership rules apply the SAME in all states. I have been a SAG member for 24 years, and am a member of several SAG Committees.

Here is the "RIGHT TO WORK" Law:

Right-To-Work Law

"State labor law that permits someone to determine for himself/herself whether or not to join a labor union. The law avoids employers from making union membership a condition of employment."

That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. Just google it like this:

"right to work"+"definition"

You have to have proof of employment as a principal or background performer in a SAG film, video, TV show or commercial for a specified number of days. Or, if you're in an affiliated union, such as AFTRA, AEA, etc.

If you're eligible, it costs $2,300 to join.

If you live in a Right-to-Work State, Texas, North Carolina, or one of the other Right to Work States, you can join by paying the fee. There are no other requirements. Ah, the advantage of Right to Work States, Yee haw!
