WASHINGTON - U.S. fourth-graders have lost ground in reading ability compared with kids around the world, according to results of a global reading test.

Test results released Wednesday showed U.S. students, who took the test last year, scored about the same as they did in 2001, the last time the test was given — despite an increased emphasis on reading under the No Child Left Behind law.

Still, the U.S. average score on the Progress in International Reading Literacy test remained above the international average. Ten countries or jurisdictions, including Hong Kong and three Canadian provinces, were ahead of the United States this time. In 2001, only three countries were ahead of the United States.

The 2002 No Child Left Behind law requires schools to test students annually in reading and math, and imposes sanctions on schools that miss testing goals.

The U.S. performance on the international test of 45 nations or jurisdictions differed somewhat from results of a U.S. national reading test, the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation's report card. Fourth-grade reading scores rose modestly on the most recent version of that test, taken earlier this year and measuring growth since 2005. During the previous two-year period, scores were flat.

I've been depressed lately. Not extremely depressed. Not enough to go to a therapist.. just enough to consult yahoo answers (ha). I'm 20 years old, in college, I have a boyfriend. My parents are going through hard times and considering divorse. I think this is really bugging me. I'm an only child and I feel alone with this. My boyfriend is always busy and I feel alone a lot of the time. I don't have many friends were I live and I've been too busy to make more.
I've been over eating and I can't seem to stop! I've been really trying but I can't control it. I was under 120 pounds and now I'm over 135. Gah, it's just getting worse and I want it to stop now. Any tips? Has anyone gone through this?
I'm feeling so terrible about everything. The weight makes me feel worse, but I can't stop eating!

I was wondering: If a male television personality was over 50 like Oprah Winfrey and never been married, would he still retain the same respect or would he be held in ill regard because he wasn’t married yet?

The fact that Oprah Winfrey isn’t married yet has not put a damper on her popularity, high regard in the public or her earning power one iota!

Can someone explain to me why when a woman is not hooked up with someone it is seen as a sign of a strong and independent female, while if a guy isn’t attached at a certain age, then there must be something wrong with him?

Is it fair to have two different assumptions regarding the same situation based on the gender of the person?

Can a guy be strong and independent too, or does he always have to be hooked up, so the public won’t freak out?
