Animals, especially social animals like cats and dogs, most certainly DO suffer emotional problems. They DO become depressed, phobic, neurotic, etc. My cat suffers greatly from separation anxiety.
1. Get a vet to check for any physical causes, skin allergies, hot spots, etc.
2. If it's not apparently physical then it may indeed be emotional and CAN be treated!
I know of someone whose dog was chewing himself raw. He was treated with a small dosage of Valium and returned to normal. Don't give up!

i almost spit my drink out when i read this! my fiance and i have decided what type of people our animals would be if they were human and we decided that our boy pap would most defiantly be an emo kid because he gives us these pitiful looks and signs all the time. he just acts like an emo kid. there is nothing physically wrong with him, its just his personality.
now, as far as your cat and clawing herself is concerned, i would have her checked by your vet. she could have allergies or a behavior issue that is making her claw at herself.

Often when cats "claw themselves" it's because they are itching at their skin, they have a hot spot of irritation on their skin, or perhaps there is something caught in their fur. I don't think cats are going to start putting their hair down over their eyes and randomly dying patches of their hair white and proclaiming that people don't understand them while wearing skinny jeans and belts. Check for warm spots, or red irritated areas on your cat.

She could just be clawing herself on accident when she scratches herself.
But that's a good question.. I'm not sure if they can become depressed. I'd imagine they can, but I don't know for sure.

yes,emo can strike cats,my friends cat is so emo that its actually barbering itself! shes pulling out large clumps of fur leaving large raw spots, unfortunatly this cannot be fixed and i think this cat may be suffering and eventually will have to be put to sleep.
