I was wondering: If a male television personality was over 50 like Oprah Winfrey and never been married, would he still retain the same respect or would he be held in ill regard because he wasn’t married yet?

The fact that Oprah Winfrey isn’t married yet has not put a damper on her popularity, high regard in the public or her earning power one iota!

Can someone explain to me why when a woman is not hooked up with someone it is seen as a sign of a strong and independent female, while if a guy isn’t attached at a certain age, then there must be something wrong with him?

Is it fair to have two different assumptions regarding the same situation based on the gender of the person?

Can a guy be strong and independent too, or does he always have to be hooked up, so the public won’t freak out?

Bakfanlin, I don't assume there is something wrong with older unmarried people, I was just reacting to society's double standard regarding the genders.

You said a mouthful - well put and so, so correct. It's the same as the woman who is really forward and outspoken in the business world is a bi*ch and a guy is considered a successful businessman.

Multi-millionaires/billionaires usually stay on the safe side when it comes to marrying someone. Men will take a chance and get married before a woman will, (when there's lots of money involved). Society is more use to men being extremely rich. And if he divorce his wife, she will get a big chunk, and that's unfair, (if she married into money). Oprah said on one of her shows that she do not need a man to take care of her. Oprah has too much to loose, if she got married. People has been putting rumors out on Oprah for the longest. Trying to bring her down. Why should she care, she's loaded. Same should go for a man.

Welcome to the double-edged sword. I really do try to make judgements(yes I judge I am human) in a one on one basis and not as a whole.

I get this all the time. As a stay at home mom a lot of people I encounter think I am lazy and do nothing all day and or they think I am uneducated, settling for an unfullfilling life etc.... Quite the opposite. I try not to do the same to others.

Maybe ask David Letterman.
There are no laws or rules that anyone HAS to be married.
Having kids is another issue entirely though.
Aside from that, assuming something is wrong with them because they are not married is shortsightedness on your part.

She has Steadman and they have been together for along time. She chooses not to carry the yoke of marriage. No one not even a man should be judged by whether they choose to marry or not.

If Oprah got married she would have to pay out billions after a divorce. Why does she need to go through that. She has her girl friend.

I think it depends on your personality, some people can get away with things others can't.
Oprah's already a strong woman, so it's no surprise when she does something that stands out.
