WASHINGTON - Around the world, a handful of scientists are trying to create life from scratch and they're getting closer

Experts expect an announcement within three to 10 years from someone in the now little-known field of "wet artificial life."

Bedau said there are legitimate worries about creating life that could "run amok," but there are ways of addressing it, and it will be a very long time before that is a problem.

"When these things are created, they're going to be so weak, it'll be a huge achievement if you can keep them alive for an hour in the lab," he said. "But them getting out and taking over, never in our imagination could this happen."

Hmm, somehow that last part about: "But them getting out and taking over, never in our imagination could this happen" is not very comforting. After all, didn't "they" say the Titanic was "unsinkable"?!

I guess I'm mad about this. In Pompano Beach there is a public spot in which many drummers and fire dancers go to have some fun during full moon, drumming and firedancing. It is the taxpayers money that maintain the beach, it belongs to the public. So on my first outing to this drum circle I decide to bring my guitar and have my friend bring his also. An hour into being there the cops showed up and broke up the fun, saying that the city commissioner got word that there is underage drinking going on there and he himself instructed the police to break down these get togethers. What a bummer!!! When will the children realize they have the time to do what they want in their own time? What drives me up the wall is that I don't even drink, for me making music is fun. I don't go to clubs and bars. What can we do to get the full moon drum circle back?

I'm not sure if it made national news, but a woman in Mesa (suburb of Phoenix) beat up her 10 year old son in a Wal-Mart on August 12. Shoppers had to call 911 to report it. http://www.azcentral.com/community/mesa/articles/0817walmart0817.html

My question is, why didn't Wal-Mart's loss prevention step in and stop it? If it was two teenages having a fight, you better beleive they would have stopped it, and called 911. But Wal-Mart did NOTHING.

This was more than just a mother disciplining her child. According to witnesses in the store, it was violence. Wal-Mart released a statement saying they don't get involved in domestic disputes. But when the kid is bleeding, it's more than that.

Anyone think that Wal-Mart management should be penalized for refusing to get involved?

I was having a party the other night when I decided to show someone on ebay a piece of clothing I was interested in. Well I guess I forgot to log out and the next morning I find out someone at the party bid on a boat and won it. I've contacted the seller and they said they don't care and they want the money (almost $3000), and if I don't pay they will take me to court. What can I do, the seller will not back down and I simply don't have the money?

He comes off to me and to others as a Mr. Fix It. Why does he also give uninvitied advice and states that his method is better if you just try it and if you don't he gets offended. By the way I am older than him by 4 years and have experienced things already that he tries to school me on.

As a scientific theory is a "well substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that incorporates facts, laws, inferences and tested hypotheses" and no amount of validation can turn a theory into a law. The fact that it is described as a theory in no way refers to scientists reservations about evolution being a fact, just as they do not have any reservations that gravity is a fact, or that those who don't understand the theory of relativity, certainly are happy to accept that as a fact as they fly 30,000 feet above the ground during air travel.

So surely if you doubt the scientific facts of evolution you must equally doubt all scientific theories, like what goes up, must come down?

So question is do you doubt all scientific theories or just cherry pick?

LOVE
I love thee with all my being.
I feel your essence coarse through me.
I see you in all things.
You more than complete me,
you are me and I you.
My chest aches,
I can not breath,
your love takes hold,
takes my breath away.
I see you in the stars,
the mountains, the lakes,
in the bluest of skies, and,
in the darkness of nights.
Your light warms me,
fills me with joy,
releases me from my fears,
bestows on me the knowledge
to receive and give.
You fill my hunger, my wanting,
my needs.

Before I'm attacked for this, let me explain:

I am an Atheist, but I feel that the qualities that people define as "spiritual" are actually the most distinct expression of the personal. They are the expression of the core of our being, of our power, of our essence.

With this in mind, I respect the beliefs of others and see "spiritual" journeys in the light of personally expressed life affirmations. In this frame of mind, I think that everything may qualify as "spiritual" in nature.

The only things certain in this life are that we all are going to rejoin the whole from which our tenuous expression that we call life has sprung. Does this allow Atheism to claim a spiritual title as well?

I know how I feel about this, and am interested in other's answers.

the main reason perhaps was i met my old college friend and realised we had so many things in common, and that there's so much more to know about life. i now have intention to leave my husband but certainly not for this old friend. i just feel i can't go on in my marriage when i don't feel anymore love for him and that our interests and needs have changed. we don't talk anymore as we don't share anything in common. i was a traditional wife and felt trapped and unappreciated. (thank God i realised it but only after 22 years). i feel happiest when i am with my four children.
