What in the human condition makes us want to become addicted?

Obviously I'm not speaking for every person, however there is a large number of people who are addicted to something. The effects on the person's life are never good.

My new job as an assistant manager is getting me thinking, are we deciding not to punish our kids?
I caught 2 ten year olds stealing toys and soda today. They resorted to lying and hiding and smirking when they were confronted. The kids behaved like they weren't afraid of their parents and knew that punishment wasn't going to happen. I'm thinking, when I was 10, which was not long ago, if my parents caught me stealing they would have beaten me to a pulp. My boss later told me they usually the parents just pay them and don't care with their kid just did.
This got me thinking, do you punish your kids if they did something like this and how would you punish your kids?

I really want to start practicing Transcendental Meditation, but I'm not sure how. I've heard that it is very expensive and you have to have a special qualified teacher. Is there any way that I can just teach myself at home, or learn from a book? Any information would be helpful, Thanks!

I am a very emotional person. I'm very close to my mother...I'm still living at home with my parents, I'm not moving in with my husband until we're married! So my question is...I know I'm going to be an emotional wreck on my wedding day, because I'll be very happy but also sad to leave my parents (I'm the youngest girl of 5 kids if this helps). For those of you who are married, are there any tricks to hold back the tears? I don't want to be crying allll day and right now thats how I think it might be!

I was on leave and stayed at my dad's house. And he had asked me to go outside and look at the ISS fly over the house with the shuttle following it. It looked like 2 stars following each other. I told my husband David about it. I described to him. David is blind. So I'm his eyes. David was injured in a FA-18 Hornet accident that took his sight. Let me know if you seen the ISS or the Shuttle. (not a launch).

In Mark 6:49 some translations say "spirit" and some say "ghost". Jesus said not to be afraid-that it was he. This more or less indicates that it was possible that they couldve seen a spirit or ghost except in this case it was Jesus and not the former? He doesnt say where is your faith and why are you afraid of spirits and/or ghosts?
So what of the spirit or ghosts?
Is it possible that the Holy Spirit known also as Holy Ghost makes differentiation of spirit and ghost by the authoritative use of "Holy"?
I just want to know the Biblical references regarding spirits and ghosts.

ok so ive known this girl for about 2 yrs and are really good friends. in the past month we finally found out that we both had feelings for each other. she told me first and i told her i shared them. the problem is shes engaged to this total jerk and he treats her bad and her family and friends wants her to leave him.
shes not happy and had left him. but after talking to him they had scheduled counseling a few months back and she feels she should do it for closure. she wants to leave but doesnt know how b/c shes been with him awhile now. shes told me and her family that shed rather be with me b/c i make her happy. im just so nervous waiting on her to be done with counseling with him. im afriad she might make the mistake of staying with him.
is there something i should say or do that i havent already? how do i get her to wake up and just leave him altogether? what should i tell her on how to break up with him since shes having trouble with it?

why a star has no ring and moons when it has intense gravity? also, IF our sun is a planet, do we call the 8 planets in the solar system the moon? it seems only planets orbit stars, and moons orbit planet, what do stars orbit?
