Yes, and I took a picture of it:

ISS created the 3 streaks higher in the photo and the Space Shuttle created the lower 3 streaks. They're dashes instead of solid lines because I took 3 separate photos and layered them together.
It was cool!

Yes, I have seen the ISS and Shuttle following closely as they went over my house just after the shuttle undocked from the station. That was a few years ago. It looked just like you described; two bright stars crossing the sky at about the same speed as you might see a high flying airliner go over.

Yes, I watched the ISS and Space Shuttle pass last month a day after the Space Shuttle left the ISS. Several of my neighbors were walking their dog, and I explained to them what was happening. They were amazed that they could see it!
Trajectory was from West to East at about 9:20 P.M. DST over central New Jersey on a beautifully clear night..

Yes!!! It was some time ago, but on the radio it said it would, so I checked on heavens-above.com for the exact time, and it really was nice. Exactly as you described it, it was in the NE. Shuttle was the one in the front I think.
The next day, I saw the shuttle landing on TV.
Other than that, I have seen the ISS 3 times i think.

Yes, I've seen both. Anytime the shuttle is up there you can see it when it's near the ISS. They are spectacular. This is a handy site to see when to observe. It's set for Columbia Missouri, so you'll want to reset it for your area.
I am so sorry to hear about your husband! How awful! I support the troops, I'm a Vet myself, but I pray this war will be over soon. Douglas MacArthur said "The soldier more than anyone prays for peace". God bless you both. Happy hunting.
