I'm looking for a comprehensive history of Britain, covering ancient times through to today. I don't seek a quick/easy read; I want a thorough book at a university-student level, but it should (hopefully) provide enough of the background and basics to be understood by an American such as I who is largely unschooled in British history. A school textbook would be fine, probably appropriate in fact.

If you could include a link to where I might purchase such a book along with your recommendation, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I am reaching for country's that are city states like Troy. Yes Troy is gone & Sparta but, I am making a example. I am not sure is Hong Kong is a City State too. Does anybody nows which present City States still standing? Thank you! :)

the difference between the law given to moses and the words of jesus are so different...contradictory..... and please don't tell me they are not...could it be that jesus the son and god the father don't always agree and share the same views that would explain why he let his son get nailed and die...think he was trying to give him a lesson...kind of toughen up a little bit..no?? your thoughts please..

I have been to the doctor but he just said to take painkillers. I want to do it naturally if I can. The first few days of my period I have terrible pain that is worse if I have caffeine or red meat. I went totally vegetarian and caffiene free and it seemed to be helping but the pain came back anyway a few months later. Any tips?

The verses that anti-islam people like to quote are taken out of context, and I've put some of them into context and used actual verses surrounding that one verse (and in cases even half verses making it look so, but stating nothing like what they try to say) to prove it. What do you think about this? This is also showing that we are not allowed to kill nonmuslims who are not physically fighting us. We are to use discretion and leave them alone.

What do you think of these two translations?

004:094] O ye who believe ! when you go forth to fight in the cause of ALLAH, make proper investigation and say not to anyone who greets you with the greeting of peace, Thou art not a believer.' I just moved to Florida from Maryland. I have a male albino corn snake that I purchased as a baby in February, so he's about 5 or 6 months old. He seems to be doing well, he is about 30 inches now. Ever since I moved here the temp. inside the cage is 78 degrees. I want to keep it so that it is 72 on the cool side and 82 on the warm side. I haven't been using the heater because when I did run it, it raised the temperature in the entire cage and went too high. Is there a way to lower the temp in there without just running more air conditioning and turning my whole house cold? I tried running a fan near his cage, but of course it didn't seem to do much to lower the temperature inside. Can a constant 78 temperature negatively affect him or his temperment? Any feedback appreciated, Thank You!

I am a Nichiren Daishonin Buddhist...I chant "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" like Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It..for those of you not familiar :)

I am planning a wedding ceremony (my fiance is a Christian) that will encompass both our faiths although he is perfectly fine with just the Buddhist one.

There are two types of war applicable to the 21st Century believers :

1. milhemet hova (obligatory war)
2. milhemet reshut (optional war)

This obligation is commented by Rabbi Chavel:

"This Commandment ... will be better understood in the light of the following passage from the 'Mishneh Torah': '

We are not to engage in war with anyone whatever unless we [first] proclaim peace to him; [this is applicable to both] an optional and an obligatory war; for it is said, When thou drawest nigh a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it (Deut XX, 10).

If [the inhabitants] accept the offer of peace... we are not to slay a soul among them, and they merely become tributary, for it is said, [All the people ... therein] shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee'." (Ibid.)

Step 1 --- Give them the option of peace (to become believers)
Step 2 ---- If they want to keep their religion, they must pay the Tribute (Head Tax)
Step 3 ---- If they deny the above two options then kill them all or enslave them.

In other words, if the city's inhabitants object to being subdued/enslaved, they have to be slain nevertheless. Also sparing their life directly contradicts Negative Commandment 49 (see note [65]).

"We must not make a covenant with idolaters, to agree on keeping peace with them or accept them practising idolatry, because it says (Deut 7:2) Thou shalt not make a covenant with them. Either they give up idolatry or they are killed. And it is forbidden to pity them, since it says (ibid.): Nor shalt thou shew mercy unto them.

The above references the command from the OLD TESTAMENT which according to Judaic law is applicable for all time and for all believers.

My dad asked me fly down south to spend Christmas with him and his family. For the past couple of years I've made up excuses but this year I'm running out! The real reason is, I can't stand being around my step brothers and sister. They treated me and my brother very badly when we were children/teenagers, so as soon as we were old enough to move away from home, both my brother and I shot through as quick as we could.

I had Christmas with them about 5 years ago, but being around them dug up too many bad memories, also my step brothers and sister huddled up together in their usual clique and I felt like an alien that had just landed on their roof.

Dad is really keen for me to come and he would be very disappointed if I did not. But I really dont think I could stand seeing my step siblings again.

Would someone help me choose some polite words to refuse?

Why can everyone see how flawed Spider-Man 3 was, but barely anyone is noticing how bad Transformers was? Most Spidey 3 viewers would say that it was okay, but made the BIG mistake of making Spidey go emo and barely making Gwen Stacy a character, and this is all well and good. But for Transformers, there were viewers who see how the film is just riddled with flaws and should be considered a terrible movie, viewers who recognize how flawed the movie is but think little of them since it's supposed to be nothing more than a summer action flick, and viewers who don't see any flaws at all and see it as the best movie they've ever seen.

How is the perception of one movie virtually universal, while the perception of another movie is literally all over the map?
