I'm looking for a comprehensive history of Britain, covering ancient times through to today. I don't seek a quick/easy read; I want a thorough book at a university-student level, but it should (hopefully) provide enough of the background and basics to be understood by an American such as I who is largely unschooled in British history. A school textbook would be fine, probably appropriate in fact.

If you could include a link to where I might purchase such a book along with your recommendation, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

G.M Treveylan - History of England (don't let the title deceive you, it covers Scotland, Wales and Ireland too, although not at such an extensive level).

It is written in a very interesting manner - covering economical factors, social factors, just about everything.

Unfortunately it's not very updated so you probably won't find much about the 20th century. But up till then it's brilliant.

The best modern history of Britain (IMHO) is 'The Isles' by Norman Davies (Published h/b 1999, p/b 2000). This is far more up to date then the previous suggestions (with respect to the learned authors) and gives a modern, holistic, approach to the history of the islands called 'Britain' from earliest pre-history. It's a great read as well. Available from .
Amazon, or check e-bay for a 2nd hand copy (I'm not parting with mine, though!)

I used this one in a couple of classes. It's a good read and very well documented.
