WASHINGTON - Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates told Congress on Wednesday that overhauls of the nation's schools and immigration laws are urgently needed to keep jobs from going overseas. "The U.S. cannot maintain its economic leadership unless our work force consists of people who have the knowledge and skills needed to drive innovation," Gates told the Senate committee that oversees labor and education issues.

Gates, whose charitable foundation has given away more than $3 billion since 1999 for educational programs and scholarships, noted that about 30 percent of U.S. ninth-graders fail to graduate on time. "As a nation, we should start with this goal: Every child in the United States graduating from high school," he said.

Gates also challenged lawmakers to push for higher educational standards and to make more challenging coursework available to students.

A federal study released last month showed about a third of high schoolers fail to take a

My transmission fluid is kind of dirty and transmission is a little rough shifting from gear to gear... The transmission shop refuses to do a flush and change fluid saying that new fluid is going to turn all those tiny metal particles loose and it will result in a lock-up. They insist on dismantling the whole thing and charging me $400 for it. Do you think what they're saying makes sense or its a rip-off?

Also, what is the difference between changing the fluid and flushing and changing?

I wasn't "born this way." I'm not "weight-challenged." I'm not a victim of brewers in Munich or the importers who mercilessly push their products. I'm not "disadvantage" or "less-fortunate" than people who work out more often and look more fit. Nobody can say "there but for the Grace of God go I."

This is true of all overweight people.

Most "low-income people", statistically, are just starting out and will one day be middle-income or high-income.

Some are chronically low-income people - just the way I'm chronically overweight.

At least with respect to those who were born here and got free education through the 12th grade, they are the product of their own decisions, their own action - or, more accurately, inaction. They are not victims. They are not "less fortunate."

If I can be honest about myself, why can't we all be honest about them?
