*winces* Apart from hurting?
They take a swab of cells from your cervix and look for any abnormalities, because mutations in the cells can be an early warning sign of Cervical Cancer.
They don't usually look for anything else, but some GPs will swab for STDs as well if you ask them too.

Smear test normally test for unusual cells unless you go to the doctor and say you think you have an STD then they will prob do a swob for that. Normally though going to a routine smear the GP will prob notice if there looks like there something wrong and refer you to the hospital or treat themselves.

a cervical smear only looks for abnormal cells it will not detect an std, your gyn,gp should make you aware of this at the appointment and if you are sexually active without protective contraception such as condoms you will be advised a full std screening. If you in the slightest suspect you may have an std or at risk of one i am also advising you to go asap and get checked it isnt invasive anymore you can perform some tests yourself these days this is yourchoice your gyn,gp will offer to do it if this is what you want just remember it could save your fertility and your life

just unusual cells and changes. I don't think they routinely check for STD but if you have worries about this, mention it to the nurse/doctor and they would organise all tests at the same time.

All a smear will check for is abnormal cells within the cervix. If you want, you can ask when you go if they can do a STD check aswell. Kill two birds with one stone!!
gud luck

It checks for abnormal cells including pre-cancerous cells.
It is not an std screen.

It only checks for abnormal cells. If you want to have them check for STDs you have to specifically ask them to. If you want them to test for HPV you have to specifically ask them on top of that. They won´t test for HPV unless you have symptoms, so you have to insist that you want to be tested for it too.

No one really knows, they just do it as some kind of a ritual.
