This Hyerventilation sound is caused by either an elongated soft palate (usually dogs with short noses have a soft palate that is too long for their face and it gets sucked in when they breath and they snort very loud until it relaxes down) or a collapsing trachea (not as usual).
Don't panic - ask the vet to have a look next times you are there and they will let you know which one it is.
Extremely common in Maltese, cavalier king charles spaniel, chihuahua, lhaha apso, shih tzu and staffies.

RE:
My dog hyperventilating?
Hi guys, it sounded like my dog was hyperventilating last night around 4:00 am. Hes a maltese/terrier mix and about 1 years old. He stopped on his own, but I'm concerned; anyone know why this would happen or what would cause it?

If it stopped, take a breath. If you have real concerns talk to your vet. My dogs seem like they are hyperventilating alot, but really that's the way they cool down after working out...

was it hyperventilating or perhaps sounding like it was trying to suck in air? Dogs often do what is referred to as a 'reverse sneeze' which is scary to listen to but is caused by allergies and not something to be concerned about.

Whats the temp? Get your dog in the shade or preferably indoors and get a fan on or stick them in a cool bath. Usually making their 'armpits' and bare skin around their belly and inside of the legs wet with cold water and sticking them infront of a fan is enough to cool them off.

Could be a ton of things. If he got something stuck in his throat, maybe allergies, could be he's coming down with something?
Get he dog into the vets to check to see what going on if anything. Thats the best way to know for sure.

All three of our dogs do this...it is likely allergy he is dealing with. They sort of start weezing for 15-30 seconds and then stop. They are trying to open up their nasal passages because something is causing them to constrict. Don't be too concerned about it unless it is very persistent.

It's collapsing trachea (kind of like a honking?) small terrier breeds are known for this. Don't worry, it's not a big deal...unless it happens all the time, for long periods of time.

It sounds like a "reverse sneeze" . It's harmless, just a little post nasal drip that causes them to snort till it clears. Smaller dogs do it more often than large breeds.

He could have been having an anxiouty attack. Did anything happen that might have scared him? Did he have a bad dream? If it happens again, you might want to take him to the vet so that they can see if it is something more.
