I am very concerned about my son. He is a very sweet, loving little boy, but when he becomes angry, he will often bite himself on his arm or try to choke himself. He also has difficulties in school, so I suspect the two issues may be related. He has seen a psychotherapist, who felt that my son is highly sensitive with some anxiety issues but not enough to cause concern. At the time I accepted her explanation, but I am growing concerned again because he is eight years old now and still has not learned to control the biting/choking. The other day he bit himself because he was "mad at himself" over something that happened (slipped and fell on the dance floor at a wedding) when he was three years old!
I am very worried as there is a family history of mental illness. I don't believe in using meds on kids unless in the most extreme cases. Surely there is some other way to help him control his anger. Should I try psychotherapy again?
Please, serious responses only, thanks.
