Please only answer this if you've actually visited a country where English is not the native language.

I visited Germany once. Before I left a friend told me that all people in Germany study English in school so I would have no problem. While I could use English in the airport, car rental shop, and my hotel. I found that when I got outside the big cities, I had a hard time getting along with just English. The people didn't understand and I was reduced to the "Dumb American" point and grunt routine.

Many people on this forum have made the statement recently that English is the "Universal Language", but my experience doesn't support this statement.

Please tell me about your experiences, and think about whether you got outside the tourism main-stream and tried to talk to the average citizen or not..

Thanks.

Well this is kinda pathetic, but i sometimes have these worries for people close in my life. It's not 24/7, but its only sometimes, but i have all these bad feelings, and i can see bad things happening to them, me going to their funeral...shi*t like that and it irritates ma mind so much. Is it just that i care for them, and are protective of them?

Okay, we had a substitute and this one girl(Miryea) kept on playing with her camera during class. This other girl(Emily) kept talking and laughing, completely making a fool of herself. So my friend Ciarra wrote a note to our teacher and said how they wouldn't listen to the sub. 4 of us girls signed it. I hate the girls Miryea, annoying Emily, and the evil ***** Alyssa because they act all ghetto when they're all Abercrombie and Fitch rapping and laughing saying "What's up with my homiez, what's up with my dogs" over and over. Well Ciarra put the note in a place where you put stuff for the teacher and ONLY the teacher. Alyssa went and took it!!! Ciarra told the principal and she said that it doesn't matter what the note said but that they stole it.

Also, Miryea heard Ciarra talking about it at lunch and turned around sreaming and crying saying "Now you hurt my feeling" -LOL. She's such a baby she went to the sub and asked to go home! She didn't tho.

I hate them all so much. How can I get revenge on those wannabe "gangstas"? They think the ghetto is a funny situation when some of us less fortunate people are stuck with it.

an old friend and i decided to hook up. he has been in london for the past five years and i was still in south africa. i went to an agency and they told me because of my age the chances of me getting a working visa would be impossible. i explained this to my friend and he said i should come over anyway cause he has a friend who has a business and will give me a job and a working visa.i gave up everything back home to be here with him,my car, a job opportunity at an international company. i was promised a lot of things when i came to london, a visa a job a car everything that i would need to get me started over here. i have been here for 2 months now and nothing has materialised, and our relationship has not worked out and we are now just back to being friends.do i stay at the glimmer of hope that something good will come out of this or do i cut my losses and go home with nothing and feeling like a failure?

Every year my mom asks me what I want for the holidays, and I make her a wishlist. This year I made one, and got pictures and made a link to it with my size, etc..., and put a little note telling her to only get a few of the items(aka like half), and then I added the cost up, and it's *gulp* almost $400, (I only asked for clothes and books). Now I feel like a horrible, selfish little brat-child, and don't want to give it to her. what should I do?

lol, I have a labrador retriever, and as you may know they are VERY hyper! I want to know some games you play with your dog to release all of their energy. My retriever doesn't retrieve, gets bored of hide and seek, and gives up on finding treats. So are there any other games out there?

I broke up with my boyfriend the day before this dance because i felt he liked me too much. at the dance he barely said 2 words to me, and grinded with this girl and slow danced with this other girl and kissed her on the cheek. i even planned not to talk to any other guys so he wouldnt feel bad, and he just threw it in my face. now im confused as to why he's doing this, because im really hurt. and hes not the type of person who would do that just to make me feel bad, so im very confused. help?

I have a dilema that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've been married for 7 years and have been out of love with my hubby for the past three of them. We have two children that I homeschool and I don't work (well, I do, but my job as a labor assistant is not regular - when I get the call, I go). I have just started training to be a midwife as well.

My hubby and I decided to have an open relationship the beginning of this year and I found a new love. I am completely in love with this person. But, if I go with him, I'm going to lose my career b/c I have to find a job to support me and the kids and get a new place. If I let him go, I can stay where I am and everything will be the same except for a broken heart.....

In your opinion, is love worth leaving security for? I could probably pick up my career at a later time in life, I'm just scared that I'm making the wrong decision if I decide to stay because of security. I don't think I can handle losing my new love...
