This a term used widely in the entertainment arena these days. It is the coming together of theatre/dance/acro/and circus style performance.
Here in Vegas there are many Cirque-style shows. They usually have some kind of a story line, but may not necessarily have a main character(s) but some do. Some use water--giant see through pools where you see the performers do amazing tricks under the water, and diving into the water, etc. Some use trapeze type rigging and the performers fly all over the stage and above the audience doing amazing stunts. They use all forms of dance and gymnastics to the extreme in all cases. If the body can be contorted in any way shape or form you will probably see it in a cirque show. They strive to bring all of these types of performance together into each show.
Oh, and the stages are becoming extremely high tech. It's not just a stage they can stand on to perform......the stage itself can rise up and down rotate and even flip upside down to create such unique shows. It's amazing.
The performers usually don't talk. There is all kinds of music, and sometime there is narration to keep the story line flowing.
The shows are all different, all amazing, and all push the envelope in new ways of technical theatre, styles, and spectacle.
It is worth seeing a show sometime if you ever can.

It is a 3 ring circus in Orlando, Florida, and is near the Theme Parks of Disney World. Soleil I think is the name of the family or something that started it, Cirque stands for Circus, maybe its Italian, Watch it sometime, actually it looks like it is all pantomine, but interesting, and musical to watch
