Dismantling the Moongod Theory
This short article is a response to a recent development amongst the attackers of Islam..........the unfounded theory that "Allah" does not refer to the One True God, but rather to a pagan diety. I will not even point out the web pages that purport this lunacy. Instead, below you will find references to the Noble Qur'an and the words of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):
I have to first start off with a few definitions. First, "Allah" is the Arabic word which denotes the One True God, the One Who created the heavens and the earth.
Now this word is very unique in the Arabic language because it has no plural of number and no gender. So, in English the word "god" can becomes "gods" or "goddess". If you say "goddess", then you imply that "god" is masculine. Well, Allah is neither male nor female. And most importantly, Allah is One. (If you were to read the Qur'an you would come across verses which say "We created..." That "We" is a plural of respect, not number. Just like speaking Spanish or Italian you address elders in the plural for respect.)
Another important point is that Christians who speak Arabic refer to God as Allah and Rabb (Lord) just as Muslims do. So, for a Christian web site to say that Muslims worship Allah, the ancient moongod is preposterous. They might as well tell their Christian brothers and sisters who speak Arabic that they are worshipping the moongod too.
The most powerful denial of this weak claim is the Qur'an itself:
The Qur'an is the literal word of Allah (or God) revealed to Prophet Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel (peace be upon both of them). The Qur'an is clear that Allah, Alone, is to be worshipped:
41:36 And if (at any time) an incitement to discord is made to thee by the Evil One seek refuge in Allah. He is the One Who hears and knows all things.
37 Among His Signs are the Night and the Day and the sun and moon. ADORE NOT THE SUN AND THE MOON BUT ADORE ALLAH WHO CREATED THEM if it is Him ye wish to serve.
38 But if they (Unbelievers) are arrogant (no matter): for in the presence of thy Lord are those who celebrate His praises by night and by day. And they never flag (nor feel themselves above it).
Actually, I probably could have just published this verse. It doesn't get any clearer than this. Allah is the Creator, and we are not permitted to worship any element of creation.
In the Qur'an, Allah describes the moon as submitting to Allah's Law. That is, the moon follows a course exactly computed, according to the Law of Allah:
31:26 To Allah belong all things in heaven and earth: verily Allah is He (that is)free of all wants worthy of all praise.
27 And if all the trees on earth were pens and the Ocean (were ink) with seven Oceans behind it to add to its (supply)yet would not the Words of Allah be exhausted (in the writing): for Allah is Exalted in power Full of Wisdom.
28 And your creation or your resurrection is in no wise but as an individual soul: for Allah is He Who hears and sees (all things).
29 Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day and He merges Day into Night; that HE HAS SUBJECTED THE SUN AND THE MOON TO HIS LAW each running its course for a term appointed: and that Allah is well acquainted with all that ye do?
30 That is because Allah is the (only) Reality and because whatever else they invoke besides Him is Falsehood; and because Allah He is the Most High Most Great.
35:13 He merges Night into Day and He merges Day into Night and HE HAS SUBJECTED THE SUN AND THE MOON TO HIS LAW: EACH ONE RUNS ITS COURSE FOR AN APPOINTED TERM. Such is Allah your Lord: to Him belongs all Dominion. And those whom ye invoke besides Him have not the least power.
14 If ye invoke them they will not listen to your call and if they were to listen they cannot answer your (prayer). On the Day of Judgement they will reject your "Partnership." And none (O man!) can tell thee (the Truth) like the One Who is acquainted with all things.
So, if the moon is subjected to the Law of Allah then how is it that Muslims worship the moongod. Wouldn't it only make sense to worship the One who created and subjected the moon, rather than the moon itself? You see, whoever created that web page is not after the Truth, they are just attempting to stop people from becoming Muslim. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the US and in the world, despite these feeble attempts (this includes the propaganda concerning women, the persecution of Christians, and terrorism.....the people who are accepting Islam in greatest numbers are women.....and the religion from which most converts come is Christianity). Anyway, back to the moongod:
36:37 And a Sign for them is the Night: We withdraw therefrom the Day and behold they are plunged in darkness;
38 And the Sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him) the exalted in Might the All-Knowing.
39 And the Moon We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of date-stalk.
40 It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon nor can the Night outstrip the Day: each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).
14:32 It is Allah Who hath created the heavens and the earth and sendeth down rain from the skies and with it bringeth out fruits wherewith to feed you; it is He Who hath made the ships subject to you that they may sail through the sea by His command; and the rivers (also) hath He made subject to you.
33 And He hath made SUBJECT TO YOU THE SUN AND THE MOON both diligently pursuing their courses: and the Night and the Day hath He (also) made subject to you.
34 And He giveth you of all that ye ask for. But if ye count the favors of Allah never will ye be able to number them: verily man is given up to injustice and ingratitude.
How is it that the moon is "subjected to us", mere humans? The moon and the sun are how we formed and measured our concept of time. The word "month" derived from the word "moon" (moonth). We measure a year by one revolution around the sun, etc. Now why would Muslims worship something Allah created for our use? See the next verse....
10:5 It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty) and measured out stages for her: that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain his Signs in detail for those who understand.
13:2 Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; is firmly established on the throne (of authority); He has subjected the sun and the moon (to His law)! each one runs (its course) for a term appointed. He doth regulate affairs explaining the Signs in detail that ye may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord.
14:33 And He hath made subject to you the sun and the moon both diligently pursuing their courses: and the Night and the Day hath He (also) made subject to you.
Now, Muslims not only refer to the Qur'an for guidance, but we look to the sayings of Muahammad and his disciples/companions to find out how he lived his life. These sayings are preserved in hundreds of volumes. Here is one where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is described as being more beautiful than the moon. How can this be if he taught his followers to worship the moon. If he was more beautiful than the object of their worship, then they would have worshipped him. This however, is a huge sin in Islam. No man, in fact no element of creation, can be worshipped. This includes Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon both of them).
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 5794 Narrated by Jabir ibn Samurah I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) on a cloudless night and began to look at Allah's Messenger and at the moon. He was wearing a red robe, and he appeared more beautiful than the moon to me. Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it.
The moon is a creation of Allah:
16:12 He has made subject to you the Night and the Day; the Sun and the Moon; and the Stars are in subjection by His Command: verily in this are Signs for men who are wise.
13 And the things on this earth which He has multiplied in varying colors (and qualities): verily in this is a Sign for men who celebrate the praises of Allah (in gratitude).
6 Verily in the alternation of the Night and the Day and in all that Allah hath created in the heavens and the earth are Signs for those who fear Him.
7 Those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us but are pleased and satisfied with the life of the present and those who heed not Our Signs
8 Their abode is the Fire because of the (evil) they earned.
6:95 It is Allah Who causeth the seed-grain and the date-stone to split and sprout. He causeth the living to issue from the dead and He is the one to cause the dead to issue from the living. That is Allah; then how are ye deluded away from the truth?
96 He it is that cleaveth the daybreak (from the dark): He makes the night for rest and tranquillity and the sun and moon for the reckoning (of time): such is the judgment and ordering of (Him) the Exalted in Power the Omniscient.
97 It is He Who maketh the stars (as beacons) for you that ye may guide yourselves with their help through the dark spaces of land and sea: We detail Our Signs for people who know.
25:61 Blessed is He Who made Constellations in the skies and placed therein a Lamp and a Moon giving light;
62 And it is He Who made the Night and the Day to follow each other: for such as have the will to celebrate His praises or to show their gratitude.
63 And the servants of (Allah) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility and when the ignorant address them they say "Peace!"
7:54Your guardian-Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six days and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil O'er the day each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun the moon and the stars (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah the cherisher and sustainer of the worlds!
Abraham (peace be upon him) rejects moon worship in the Qur’an:
6:74 Lo! Abraham said to his father Azar: "Takest thou idols for gods? for I see thee and thy people in manifest error."
75 So also did We show Abraham the power and the laws of the heavens and the earth that he might (with understanding) have certitude.
76 When the night covered him over he saw a star: he said: "this is my Lord." But when it set he said: "I love not those that set."
77 When he saw the moon rising in splendor He said: "This is my Lord." but when the moon set he said: "Unless my Lord guide me I shall surely be among those who go astray."
78 When he saw the sun rising in splendor he said: "This is my Lord; this is the greatest (of all)." But when the sun set he said: "O my people! I am (now) free from your (guilt) of giving partners to Allah.
79 "For me I have set my face firmly and truly toward Him Who created the heavens and the earth, and never shall I give partners to Allah."
Also, the moon will be destroyed on the Day of Judgement:
75:5 But man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him.
6 He questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
7 At length when the Sight is dazed
8 And the moon is buried in darkness.
9 And the sun and moon are joined together
10 That Day will Man say "Where is the refuge?"
11 By no means! No place of safety!
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.422 Narrated by Abu Huraira The Prophet said, "The sun and the moon will be folded up (deprived of their light) on the Day of Resurrection."
Not only is it important to note that the Allah will destroy the moon on the Day of Judgement, but the worshippers of the moongod did not believe in a Judgement Day or Resurrection.
And lastly, when the moon eclipsed on the day of the death of the Prophet’s son, the Prophet (peace be upon him) denied that it happened for his sake:
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.424 Narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas The Prophet said, "The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the Signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of someone's death or life. So, if you see them (i.e. eclipse), celebrate the Praises of Allah (i.e. pray)."
To sum up: Allah is the One, True God, the Creator. Muslims worship the Creator, not creation.
