Down is sold by something called fill weight, which is a measure of fluffiness and insulating ability, NOT a measure of weight at all. The better quality down is very fluffy with lots of miniature tiny wisps of fluff on each feather, and comes from the tummy of a goose.

The thing to look for in your feather bed is the amount of down as opposed to feathers. Down is softer and lighter. Feathers are pokey and don't get all fluffy. Down is sold by fill weight, and a number of 550 or higher is the best.

A feather bed might be filled with 2 lbs of 550 fill. Or with 3 lbs of feathers. Usually, comforters have the most expensive down so they keep you warm, but are very light and fluffy.
