Many people say that where the levees broke & where most of the flooding was where the poor black people lived & many of us black people drowned. & the white people got offended when he said that, & the Black people are having trouble with FEMA, but the white people aren't. Many Blacks felt let down by the government so that's why they decided not to come back to New Orleans, & the white people got the nerve to get offended by one phrase. All Mayor Nagin was trying to do was get his Black people to come back to New Orleans. We Black people were known for our 2nd lines, our cooking, Jazz music, the Zulu parades, & all the other special stuff. We Black people kept New Orleans alive. Now am I right or wrong?

I currently have lived in San Diego for the past 6 years after been born and raised in the SF Bay Area. I love CA but want a change and see what it's like outside of this state. I visited NO in 2004 for Mardi Gras and thought it was one of the greatest cities in the US, very unique for it's history and culture. I really want to do something to help that city get back on it's feet. I have a degree in Urban Studies and Planning and would like to get into land use planning and development but all of my work experiance is in transportation planning. Does anyone know if there are a lot of opportunities in land use planning, development, redevelopment, or anything related to urban planning in New Orleans currently? Would it be able to find a good job in that field? Also I was thinkng of pursuing a masters in urban planning at UNO, does anyone know anything about the school or program?

Hi:
I am flying into New Orleans airport on a Saturday morning and flying back out the following Saturday morning. I am going to be volunteering at the Greater New Orleans Recovery Week. The medical clinic I need to get to is on Read Boulevard, which from what I understand is on the east side of the city. I called New Orleans Airport Shuttle and they told me that they do not go out that far. They said I would have to take a cab. I really do not want to spend that much for a round trip to/from the airport. Does anyone have any other ideas? I am looking into public transportation (the bus), but it would be nice to hear from someone familiar with the area. I am going to try calling the bus company to see if any routes go to where I need to go. Anyone have any other ideas? Or does anyone know what buses I would need to get on to get from the airport to Read Boulevard (I believe it is 5501 Read Boulevard)?
Thanks! Vanessa :)

I would like to see the Republicans answer this one without lying like they usually do.Why is our American city sitting in ruins without any money being sent there to rebuild our American city after over a year that has past the devastating hurricane. This could happen again, nothing has been done to prevent a future catastrophe. They showed homes in New Orleans that are still vacant in the 9th ward, and garbage is still strewn about.
Baghdad is receiving more aid to build up their city than our own American city. Why is this country helping others out before helping its own.
Someone's priorities are mixed up .

How much more money and time is it going to take for New Orleans to recover? Now the Government wants 100 big companies to help supply labor. The U.S. and the people have already sent billions and thousands of people have gone have swarmed down there to work. What if the place floods again, being 14 ft below sea level.

I've just watched the film 'Double Jeapardy', which of course features this fine city.

However, does anyone Stateside know what the condition of the city is now? Has it recovered at all from that devastating Huricane?

A friend and i are planning a quick extended weekend trip to New Orleans in March staying downtown. We've been there pre-Katrina and have always stayed downtown/french quarter and WALKED everywhere. All I've heard about is the recent crime spree but I'm not sure in what areas of the city, my question is if it is still safe/recommended to be able to stay downtown and still walk everywhere we want to go (mostly riverwalk, french quarter ... that kind of stuff)? I'm sure its fine during the day but what about late at night?
