Ok, this will be expert advice because I am from the area. LOVE NOLA--- u absolutely HAVE to visit. Go to the cliche French Quarter, Cafe du Monde, etc., but also hit the Aquarium of the Americas, Audubon Park (and Zoo), so many restaurants I don't know where to begin (but some musts include Frankie and Johnnie's, The Camellia Grill, NOLA's, The Palace Cafe), and Magazine Street (awesome shopping!!). Stay in the Hampton Inn on St. Charles in Uptown Garden District (the best area of the city).
Now, for Mardi Gras, GO TO THE ACTUAL HOME OF MARDI GRAS---- MOBILE,AL> bet ya didn't know that!!! Only two hours from NOLA, Mobile is often overlooked, but it is actually quite similar to New Orleans (especially down and mid-town). Mobile's Mardi Gras is overall much sfaer and cleaner than NOLA's, yet you are still experiencing that true Mardi atmosphere, and yes, it will be filled with beads, tacky people, etc. Mardi Gras originated in Mobile, as any Mobilian will tell you, but New Orleans stole the idea and made it big. Mobile's M.G. is tons classier than N.O.'s. If you come, stay in the newly renovated Battle House hotel by the new RSA Tower. Eat at the Dew Drop, Wintzell's, and La Pizzeria. Go to the Mobile Mardi Gras Museum and the Gulf Coast Exploreum. Have fun----- bring lots of friends and enjoy!!

If you want to have an experience that very few people get to have, then take some time to find out about geocaching before you go to New Orleans. There is one geocache that is absolutely incredible and is a favorite of just about anyone who finds it. You can find information about the cache at: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCE02C
Be sure to try to find this cache during the work week. My mom and I found this cache along with several other really interesting caches. Geocaching can be a great way to explore a city and learn some history that may or may not be well known. Good luck!
