Like the others said, the Mardi Gras season began on Little Christmas, January 6th. The parades begin on February 9th and get progressively larger as the season rolls along.
If I were planning a trip for Mardi Gras, I would say to fly in on either the Thursday or Friday before Mardi Gras Day, Tuesday, February 20th this year. At the latest I would fly in on Friday morning so you can get to your hotel, get situated, and head out for Krewe d'Etat which rolls that night. There are three parades on Thursday night, which you can see if you have time to come in early.
Saturday and Sunday are the nights the two "super-krewes", Endymion and Bacchus, roll. Monday has Orpheus, a newer parade founded by Harry Connick, Jr. and Mardi Gras is obviously that Tuesday. The Mardi Gras day parades are during the day, starting at day break in areas and ending around 2:00 to 3:00 pm. After that some diehards will head to the Quarter.
Warning though, Mardi Gras ends promptly at midnight on Tuesday/Wednesday night. The crowds quickly diminish at that time and you will not see many people, other than ill-informed visitors, out on the streets until the next weekend. I would fly out that Wednesday, unless you plan to make the rest of your time a more relaxed vacation as the rest of the city goes back to work, oh, and gets ashes on Wednesday.

Technically, the Mardi Gras season starts January 6th, it just keeps building momentum from there. Mardi Gras is Feb. 20th this year, and in New Orleans the party starts to get crazy the friday before (feb 16th).

the first big parade is on february 9th
mardi gras in in the 20th i suggest you go downtown for mardi gras, its funner, and the floats are prettier. although it can get crazy sometimes. so if your going to be here for endymion you must go to that its the best parade you should also go to bacchus, zulu, and orpheus
here is the sight with all the listings of parades with the times
