Yes, it'll be safe for you to come down. Just like when visiting any city, use common sense, enjoy yourself, and don't look too much like a tourist! If you're going to be uptown, in the CBD or downtown, just stay to the lit areas where other people are...don't go off exploring on your own at night! Have fun, thanks for coming down.

It almost cracks me up how people still have this mentality about New Orleans. I am from the area, and I can tel you that things are A-OK for visiting!
The majority of the city is back up and running almost exactly as before Katrina. As for storm damage, you can definitely still see it in those neighborhoods hit hardest (by the 17 th Street Canal and 9th Ward, in particular), but you also can witness the often overlooked hurricane damage along the Mississippi Gulf Coast (Waveland, Biloxi, Ocean Springs) and in Bayou la Batre, AL.
While you can still see storm damage, it is not anywhere near as drastic as it was a year ago. But come on down to New Orleans and have a wonderful time!

Ok here's how new orleans works...u dont mess with the people they dont mess with u!!! its safer than new york city ill tell u that and if ur not looking for trouble 9 time outta 10 u won't see or find any. even in the french quarters there's undercover cops everywhere..trust me!!! so have fun and enjoy your stay and if u drive a luxury car the only people u should worry about bothering u is the cops because they seem to think everyone is selling drugs. FYI i've lived in new orleans for 20 years and newyork for 9 months and i have never experienced the things in new orleans that i have here in new york. most people in the tourist areas are tourist anyways so you all will be in the same boat!---by the way THERE ARE NO GANGS IN NEW ORLEANS!!!!! PLEASE STOP SAYING THAT U SOUND SO STUPID:-)

Unless you intend to establish a drug territory during your visit, you should be safe. There has been an increase in some crime, but it's mostly drug related. But it's not as much a reflection upon New Orleans as much as it shows what would happen in any city where all of its drug dealers were suddenly moved into a one square mile area of a city. Don't worry though, that one square mile area does not include the French Quarter or other parts of town you would want to visit.
Though, you still want to keep your wits about you. You wouldn't want to stumble around any city like a drunken fool.

Yes, I think it's safe. The murders have been tied to "turf" wars between rival gangs. They have not been random killings of tourists. However, just like any large city, New Orleans has neighborhoods you avoid. Eat, drink and be merry in the French Quarter and on Bourbon Street. You'll be safe and have a blast.

I was just down in Louisiana and felt very uncomfortable about going into the old city. Papers reported street shooting and the next week there were more street shootings. You can see some damaged buildings as you travel east-west along the interstate. Many Highways are still unopened. The local churches do provide for volunteers cleanup each weekend in the city. On the ocean the water is brown and uninviting.

New Orleans is now the murder capital of the U.S. Personnally, I wouldn't go. It sounds like both the police and medical systems there are still overwhelmed.
