For New Orleans, it began on Saturday, August 27th when the National Hurricane Service made its 10:00a.m. announcement it was going to hit Louisiana rather than Florida. Hurricane force winds began hitting Louisiana about a day and a half later around midnight Sunday/Monday. By Monday at 9:00a.m. the hurricane eye was hitting Mississippi, By 10:00a.m. the hurricane was inland over Mississippi and about 80 miles away from New Orleans. Also at 10:00a.m. the New Orleans-side of the 17th Street Canal levee broke and that was when the hurricane ended and the manmade disaster began.
