I have a friend at Ft Polk and she doesn't like it. If you like country living then you might like it. She said Wal-Mart is pretty much the only thing around. It is very boring! She is trying to leave and go to Germany. My sister have a friend that just left Ft Polk and she also didn't like it. They have some nice on post housing if you stay on base with dependents. I am from Louisiana and we don't want to be station there because it is "TOO COUNTRY" for us.

Good Luck!

I did not live in Ft. Polk but I grew up in Alexandria which is about 45 minutes east. Ft. Polk is an Army Base as I am sure you are aware. It is near Leesville in Vernon Parish. I hate to tell you this but Alexandria is the closest "big city" to you and that ain't sayin' much. Alex (pronounced Elle-ek by locals) has about 50,000 people and is very used to the military having had England Air Force Base for many years. You will find the people incredibly hospitable to you as a military person as long as you are respectful. This is a Southern town after all. Take advantage of all that Louisiana has to offer. You will be about 1.5 hours from Cajun country, 3 hours from Baton Rouge and LSU Football, 4 hours from New Orleans and Saints Football, about 3.5 hours from Houston, etc. It's not a bad area until they tell you that you have to go into the field in August. Good Luck! Bienvenue en Louisiane!

FT Polk is one of the only places I would actually live on post, because the town sucks more then the base. I was going to go to Polk because of the non-deployable training units but luckily for my wife another post had an opening, but I deployed at the other base. Start looking for outdoor hobbies that you can get in to or thinks you can do at home to entertain your self. Good Luck
