I currently have lived in San Diego for the past 6 years after been born and raised in the SF Bay Area. I love CA but want a change and see what it's like outside of this state. I visited NO in 2004 for Mardi Gras and thought it was one of the greatest cities in the US, very unique for it's history and culture. I really want to do something to help that city get back on it's feet. I have a degree in Urban Studies and Planning and would like to get into land use planning and development but all of my work experiance is in transportation planning. Does anyone know if there are a lot of opportunities in land use planning, development, redevelopment, or anything related to urban planning in New Orleans currently? Would it be able to find a good job in that field? Also I was thinkng of pursuing a masters in urban planning at UNO, does anyone know anything about the school or program?

I think it is great that you want to use your degree to do some good in an area that so badly needs it. Please don't let the negative attitudes of so many of these posts dissuade you. Odds are, most of them have not been to New Orleans since Katrina, and all their "facts" come from sensationalist media reports.

Yes, crime is a problem in certain parts of the city. But I have been there countless times, before and after Katrina, and have never had any issues. I was in San Fransisco twice, and once my car was broken into and everything in it was stolen. Of course, I was young, inexperienced, and left it in a bad part of the city. Lesson learned. Use the same common sense in N.O. as you would in any other urban environment and you will be fine.

If you want to attend UNO, then their website would be the best place to find out if their program meets your needs. As for finding work, have you checked USA jobs? They probably have postings for govt. jobs in your line of work. Before you make any rash decisions, look into housing. It is a lot harder to get there now, and far more expensive.

Good Luck

it depends where you want to live. In some places you may need a gun lol but others like not down town N.O you maybe be fine. There have been more murders this year already but it just depends on where you live. You may want to come and see before you make up your mind that you want to stay here. If you go to UNOs website you may find more info about the school. Hope i helped lol

New Orleans is a third-world country now. If anything, they need help. Unfortunately, you will have to be your own bodyguard since people are getting murdered for their tennis shoes down there. The police can't keep up with the crime and drug trafficking and the French Quarter is barren with tens of businesses closing each month.
I would say you have better opportunities in CA.
Good luck.

If you enjoy getting robbed and maybe even murdered, you should go for it. If you do not like crime ridden neighborhoods, you should stay in California.
