Mardi Gras can be scary if you find yourself in the wrong part of the French Quarter. The parades are fun, but tourists get really crazy at night in the quarter. Before Katrina, if you went down Bourbon and there was a celebrity or half naked women on a balcony, you were forced to walk whichever way the crowd was moving because of so many people pushed in together. I went to Mardi Gras 2006 after Katrina, and it was very scaled back. Not sure what this year will bring.
Notice I said TOURISTS get crazy there! lol

Mardi Gras is pretty much what you make of it. Unfortunately, Mardi Gras does attract a lot of scum that, thankfully, tend to congregate in the French Quarter rather than infect the whole city. Pre-Katrina the French Quarter was so bad I would never take a girl there at night, at least on Lundi Gras or Mardi Gras nights. Those tourist girls foolish enough to lift their tops were groped by every project-dweller and dirtbag in sight. Of course, you can usually avoid the trouble areas by staying off of Bourbon Street and closer to the river.
That being said, there are other areas of the city which will come to EXTREME life that weekend, such as the Warehouse District and Uptown, where the more normal people, college students, and locals will tend to be. I would feel perfectly safe in those areas and everyone is just out to have a good time.
Despite the opening paragraph, I absolutely love Mardi Gras. The parades were always a blast for me and my friends and going out in New Orleans is always an adventure. Bring a big group of fun friends (preferably those that can handle their liquor) and you should have a great time.

Mardi Gras is awesome!! I went in 2004 and had the best time of my life. The parades, the parties, the people...were all amazing. Being able to drink in the streets and catch beads is such a fun experiance. The only bad experiance I had there was my own fault, I was vomitting off and on for nearly 8 hours b/c we wanted to stay up all night and watch the Zulu Parade on Mardi Gras day at 8am so we drank tons of red bull and vodka, not the smartest thing. Just remember to pace yourself b/c the bars dont close there.
