I'm using the S&B Hayashi Rice sauce blocks. I'm adding beef, onions, carrots, potatoes and button mushrooms. The end result doesn't have much tomato taste and I'm not sure if it's because the potato made it starchy. Do you have to add tomato puree to the sauce mix? And is it common to put potato and carrots in the mix? It's not curry, but was wondering what the norm was, since mine tasted kind o weird.

I'm taking a trip to Japan and I want to go to Harajuku District. I hear you go on Sunday to see the cool dresses and fashion. But I really know nothing else about this district, except its exotic fashion. What happens on Sunday in Harajuku District? When they dress up, can i take pictures with them? Can I ask to? I'm really curious..because it looks so cool!

My friend (Japanese) said she did not want a tatami room when her and her husband built their house....She said many Japanese are starting to feel this way because its very expensive to replace and alot of people don't want to deal with it so they just have hardwood or whatever.

Do you think it's true? And I've noticed in some Japanese homes, things seem more "western", like the furniture and such.

Do you think tatami rooms in homes are going out of style and practicality? Do you have tatami in your home?

I may be traveling to Osaka and Tokyo soon, but I will be going by myself, so there's no one to split hotel costs with. Do you have any recommendations for good, cheap places to stay in these areas? Thanks!

Legitimate answers only, please.

Well, it's not really stiff shoulders, but muscle knotting at the base of the neck, or something. It's not what Westerners might think of as muscle fatigue, I don't think.

Anyway, I've done some research and I cannot get any good answers but it might be stress or depression related. Anyone want to add their expert or amatuer opinion?

Sorry I have to delete the last question coz i find it too broad and less controversial :) Good Luck!

I am currently visiting Japan and am interested in a couple jobs on base and possibly staying here for a while if I can find a decent good paying job.

My question: what is the most efficient means of getting a SOFA stamp to be able to apply for the jobs on base here...?

Does anyone have experience with my situation?

I am visiting my Japanese wife on my passport and have base access as I am now inactive military. One place (MWR) on base told me it would take 4-6 weeks after I turn in the paperwork to be sponsored by them to get a job.

What other possibilities are there or jobs people know of that they need positions filled?

Thank you all so much for your time and thoughts.

I was looking into travel on the Narita Express to Yokohama, but it's kinda expensive. Is there an alternative way to get from Narita to Yokohama on the cheap?

I'm planning on going to japan in 2 weeks and was wondering if the JR East pass covers the narita express. The Narita express is about $50 each way and if the ticket for the JR pass is about $140(youth ticket. I'm 21) then it would definitely be worth buying the pass. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have seen statistics that over 50% of adult men smoke in Japan. In the March 15, 2007 edition the economist showed Japanese smoking over 2200 cigarettes per person per year (7th highest, and #1 non-european country) .... Is this changing much? http://www.economist.com/daily/chartgallery/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9177235

I have a friend that is becoming a Contractor at a base in Japan. He asked me if he could become a permanent resident of Japan. In case anyone doesn't know what SOFA status means it is the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). I'm am wondering if there is anyone on this forum that has done it before? I have read in previous answers that you must live at Japanese addresses for five years. I'm not sure working for the US Goverment would count. I don't think he is going to marry a Japanese national as well. Can anyone that has done this chime in please? Thanks

It's not only because of the price of fuel, is it? I was a little surprised at how expensive it was just to go from Tokyo to Hiroshima by shinkansen considering it's not really *that* far geographically. I would love to visit in Hokkaido also, but I don't know if we will be able to afford it!

What's your opinion on why it's so expensive?

My first name is Kirstin. (Pronounced the same way as the actress Kirsten Dunst).

I know that using the Katakana alphabet there is no perfect adaptation of how to spell this. However, the closest ways I've seen so far are:

カーステイン
or
キルステン

Do you know which of these spellings would be considered a closer adaptation of my name or do you think that there might be an even better way to spell it? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!!
