Genetics has nothing to do with (genetics never has anything directly to do with it).
It is entirely a matter of diet.
Feed a Japanese a diet with lots of fish and vegatables and they stay thin. Feed them cheesburgers and fries and they become lard buckets just like anyone else.
My brother and I are first generation Asian Americans. We grew up eating diets that were low in meat and animal fats and high in vegatables and protein from fish and soy. We are thin. My brother's son is totally assimilated and stuffs his face with fast food. He's fat.
As much as fat people like to fantasize that it not their fault they are fat, the fact is that it is. Don't eat and you lose weight. Eat more than you need and you gain weight. That is an irrefutable truth.

I don't think they are skinny..because they are healthy.
Skinny people don't have enough food to eat and sick. malnourished. Different to Japanese that are health conscious and do lots of walking, running on rush hours, cycling and standing at work. I knew a Japanese woman who worked as a cashier and stands more than 8 hours a day for 20 years at work, then take train after work for another hour standing. I think they do lots of body moves and balance diet. Asian people like Chinese also do these kind of thing. But smoking and drinking contribute a lot of problem too, lots of stress at work or school. The one who stays balance in everything would have a healthy, long life to live.
I could see some boys with bones , but they are really strong and do lots of sports, very active.. amazing.

I have heard of that Americans eat more than double of Japanese diet and the foods are sweeter and fatter.
When Japanese drink green tea, they ordinarily don't add suger but Americans love sweet tea and you can't find a cup of tea without suger in cofee shops in America right ??(I haven't been to the US so I might have written somewhat wrong...
Japanese also tend to take notice not to get bad balanced nutrition and foodstuff.
In my case, when I always eat MacDornalds or something like that fatty food,I feel little sick and come to want to take Japanese low fat and more vegetal food.
I think it's more food thing than exercise.

Metabolism, mostly, I guess.
BTW, not all Japanese are skinny, more than 50% are fluffy, and I often see overweight people (mostly housewives and young girls with non-Japanese style of life)
Japanese pay attention to what they eat, and on each food, even tea or mineral water, there's description of the contains, and in every restaurant they give the calories of every meal.It is much easier to control the calories you take. Japanese eat less fried food than an average European. And , from my personal experience, when I switch from rice to bread I always put on weight. In Japan it is easier to live without cereals. Except rice, they are not a predominant meal.
Yes, as it was mentioned, Japanese walk or use bicycles and have very reliable public transport, so they don't use cars so much.
The fish is mostly oily one, but is contains less fat than meat.
But generally, there are many fat Japanese. I'm weight maniac nearly, and when I walk the street, I always pay attention on others weight.

We generally eat properly-cooked food (not necessarily home-cooked, but not industrially-prepared food) in smaller portions. And we tend to walk a lot, because when you live in a heavily populated area as most Japanese do, pretty much everything is within walking distance. In everyday life you walk ten minutes to the nearest station, five from the station to the office, 5 minutes to the supermarket, five minutes to lunch, etc. When added up they make a considerable amout of exercise.

I am American and constantly work to eat healthy meals. But, when I go to Asia, I always loose weight while forgetting about diets. It may be genetics partially. I think it is. But, the diets are much better. Beef and milk are new to Asia. I rarely see deserts offered. Why eat fast foods when regular meals are available and cheap. Lastly, try eating too much with chop sticks!!!

I moved from California to Japan a few months ago and almost immediately lost 15 pounds.
They eat healthy here: healthy food, healthy/reasonable portions, and with the prices of food it helps you be more judicious in what you eat here.
Exercise, I'm not as well informed about. They do walk and bike a lot as a way of life but I'm pretty sure for many japanese that's about it as far as exercise.

I'm not sure but they eat so little.
I suggested some of them to eat a little more, and they replied that I just eat too much. I'm not fat though.
Also, a lot of the food there were healthy. The foods were less greasie and oily compared to the food here in America.

Food - a lot of vegetables and seafood, but we do like meats as well. Our meals are medium sized, not big meals but enough to satisfy and not get you full. Green tea is healthy but I don't like it =)
Exersize - walking, biking mostly.
