I have seen statistics that over 50% of adult men smoke in Japan. In the March 15, 2007 edition the economist showed Japanese smoking over 2200 cigarettes per person per year (7th highest, and #1 non-european country) .... Is this changing much? http://www.economist.com/daily/chartgallery/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9177235

Decreasing, I would say. Nowadays there are non-smoking times and areas in public places, and smoking cessation aids on the market. During my first trip to Japan in 1990 there was none of that. That has to have some influence on overall consumption. At least people are now aware that it's not a good thing to do.

Smoking isn't decreasing, according to my what my boyfriend sees (he's a Japanese national). He thinks that the younger generation is becoming more into smoking.

Smoking among older people is seen kind of like a social thing. It's the "cool" thing to do around co-workers, etc.

Which sucks, because even arcades allow smoking. Us poor non-smokers are subject to the 2nd hand smoking :(.

i would say it's decreasing, albeit ever so slowly. The price of cigs just went up, but they are still very very cheap compared to the US and Europe. Smoking is also very entrenched in their culture.

I'm not sure if its decreasing but the japanese government is taking more and more steps to restrict smoking.

Recently their installing smoke card scanners in vending machines starting in tokyo.

Now you need to get a prepaid smoke card that contains your identification and scan it in the machine.
