For the last several years that i've been to japan, Its been rare to see an imported car.
The japanes government put a import tax on foreign goods.
Besides, the japanese are all about helping their own people by buying things made in japan.
I'm not sure they would even consider buying an american car.

No. Imports sell plenty right here coz they seem to be a great vehicle! The few Fords that sell in Asia at the instant are not something like the Fords right here, they have Ranger's there (i mean Mazda's hahaha) yet they're Diesel and look plenty distinctive interior and out.

I lived in Japan from April 1995 until this passed April and Fords are not that popular. I saw a lot of the late 90's taurus's, but only a few if that truks and SUV's. The SUV's I saw were the explorer and expedition. The explorer is offered in left hand drive as well. The main reason for not seeing Trucks there is due to how the Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI) works. Pick up truck are listed the same as semis...They carry an 1 series tag which is the most epensive. Hope this helps...

Um..no, there are definitely not a lot of Ferraris in Japan. Japanese do hold European cars in high esteem, that's true. But Joriental is exaggerating. When you do see a Ferrari, of course they stand out, that's all.

Ford the company has a large presence in Japan, but Ford the BRAND does not. Definitely, not at all.

Remember that in 1996 Ford took controlling share of Mazda. Mazda's head offices in Hiroshima are run by Ford American management now. Almost all of the cars they produce and sell in Japan are still branded as Mazda, not Ford. Mazda has a relatively small market share in Japan, but these could rightfully be considered as Ford products.

Mazda, Volvo and Jaguar are part of the Ford group, and Mazda does quite well even if it's not in the same league as Honda/Toyota. If you take a look at Ford's compact SUVs and pickups, they are almost the same vehicles as Mazda's equivalent.

Volvo and Jaguar have a following in Japan. The baby Jag sedan is the same chassis as the baby Lincoln sedan-just different branding/styling for different markets. So as a corporate group Ford has pretty decent market share in Japan even if not under the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury brands.

I don't think the Ford vehicle sell a lot in JP,always seen Japanese vehicle and some famous car from europe.
But when I was stayed in JP, I saw an old Ford Mondeo sedan.

Recently,Japan imported thousands of SUV like "Ford Escape" & "Mazda Tribute" from Taiwan.Because the exterior and interior are different from the U.S style & the quality is good that made in Taiwan passed Japanese strictly test so these SUV almost sold out in Japan.

I agree that in Japan, European cars are very popular. I have only seen two Ford cars in Japan, and both of them were Ford Mustangs. I have seen a couple of Chevy Avalanche though and that surprised me too. But the majority of cars I see in Japan are Toyota or Nissan.

P.S. Speaking of Ferrari, I just got back a few min ago from the Tokorozawa area, and I saw a J guy washing his red Ferrari, no joke.

You see a few Ford SUVs every now and then and maybe a Taurus station wagon, but for the most part, they don`t sell a whole lot here. Probably less than 1% of the car market. European cars sell much better. Mercedes, BMW, and Volkswagon/Audi are much better sellers. Keep in mind that gas costs around 6 bucks a gallon here right now...you don`t want any American gas guzzlers here!
