I don't watch anime. Nor do I see what the big deal is. Just cartoons to me.
But my son likes Pokemon and Yugioh, as he should, because he's 9 years old.
How many thumbs down for me from all the otaku?

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind by Hayao Miyazaki.
It is perfect. Interlaced with the overall message about the dangers of pollution and human ignorance and hate is caring and compassion for all things as well as hope and determination in a future without it.
The movie is actually quite upbeat compared to the manga. In the manga Nausicaa and the world take on a much darker tone that is a bit surprising for Miyazak but if you like the movie you must read the manga it completes the story and is so amazing.
Now just to address one thing. TokyoLiv_in09 mentioned that it is all cartoons. I would agree to that after seeing pokemon *shutter* . Pokemon and the mass commercial release of shows like it ruined anime!
For anyone who thinks of Pokemon when they hear anime go out to blockbuster and rent a Hayao Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli movie. Rent Kiki's Delivery Service or My Neighbor Totro for your son. Rent Nausicaa, Whisper of the Heart, Laputa Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, or Only Yesterday (Omohide Poro Poro)
Trust me you'll soon forget that your watching an animated movie. OH and if you do (I know it's hard for most people) but watch the subtitled version. The dubbed version kills the feel of about 99.9% of the anime out there! ^_^

Though I wouldn't consider myself a fan, I have watched a lot of animes and I can honestly say some are downright crappy. Many just caters to either boy's fantasy to be the object of every hot girl around him or a girl's fantasy wherein she got the attention of the hottest, most intelligent, most fashionable president of a big company and likes this guy even though he is the world's greatest jerk. Yea right. Dream on. What kind of self-respecting woman would want a jerk?
As for your question, it has to be Slam Dunk because even though it is not that realistic, I loved the comedy aspects in it. I love the story and the artwork too.

I agree with Askawow..
When it comes to favorite Anime..it depends on ages of viewers.
I would say Doraemon and Sazae San for family viewers, and for young kids, Dragon Ball, for small kids..Anpanman.
If these anime are still on TV, that means these last for generation..then these are the favorites.

favorite anime of all time... i cant choose just one.
chibi maruko chan
sazae san
doraemon
anpanman
simajirou
those are no violence, no political matter, no religious story. always happy ending. (anpanman has little bit problem..., he always defeat baikinman. but almost all japanese parents love this story.)
very good for small kids. just like 'cliford the big red dog' or something like that.

One Piece. It depends... do you like pirates movie?? But this one is the best anime i ever seen... The main character in this story is Monkey D. Luffy, he ate a devil fruit, he has a special abbility. However, he couldn't swim forever.
Naruto, it's the best ninja-anime for teens. It's an epic and hilarious, sometimes. One night, a strong beast kyubbi or cyubbi ( i don't know how to write them) attacked a small village called which i have forgotten... it was a damn nice anime!!
just watch one piece and naruto..
Other nice anime:
-azu manga daioh
-avatar (for kids)

HUNTER x HUNTER.
It's like heroin after the 10th episode. If you decide to watch it, give it a chance because the first couple of episodes are so different then the actual anime.
Everyone says this and it puts off people with no patience but trust me it's worth it.

Macross (or Robotech as it was introduced in the US and other places), it was a great series and innovative in that the heroes didn't always win with the same weapon or tactic every time (ie Voltron), and it prominently featured a love story.
For me it was my first love story as a young girl, so it'll always be memorable to me. I own the DVD set, haha.
