I'm using the S&B Hayashi Rice sauce blocks. I'm adding beef, onions, carrots, potatoes and button mushrooms. The end result doesn't have much tomato taste and I'm not sure if it's because the potato made it starchy. Do you have to add tomato puree to the sauce mix? And is it common to put potato and carrots in the mix? It's not curry, but was wondering what the norm was, since mine tasted kind o weird.

Lots of good answers already!
♡No, I would have to say it's not really common choco cat. Carrots, sometimes.
(*^o^*)BUT!...you can add carrots, potatoes, anything you like. (It's your Hayashi rice.)
I usually don't, it resembles stew and curry too much if I do. (Or so my hubby says.)
I, as the others said, use basically onions, beef and 50% of the time mushrooms. My hayashi rice usually looks something like this:

I always add red wine to my Hayashi rice too. Gives it a good flavor. I don't add tomato puree to my Hayashi but occasionally add a bit to curry.
Hmmmm, I think the added ingredients may have had something to do with the lack of taste. Or you used too much water.?
Don't worry, TRY again. To be honest when I first came to Japan I had the same problem and questions about Hayashi rice, curry, beef stew and cream stew!
Now, I make the best curry and beef stew...practice practice until you get the taste you like. Try the wine, (^_-)-☆ it makes a difference and let it set awhile to aquire the flavor.
Also- you may want to try another brand. You may find you like the taste better.\(^∇^)/
Happy cooking =^.^=choco cat!♡
Oh! I sometimes serve hayashi omurice, it's yummy!♡^_^♡

Yes. Onions, sliced button mushrooms and beef only basically. Some ppl add carrots, but no potatoes. Less ingredients. You don't need add tomato puree, but some red wine. Boil it with water for 30 min with low heat before adding S&B Hayashi blocks.
Japanese don't eat Hayashi and Curry after cooked immediately. They leave them in the cooking pan for half day to one day, and reheat it before eating. This enhance the flavor.

I use beef, onion and mashrooms, too. If I want to use potatoes and carrots, I make beef stew instead. I don't use tomato puree (I suppose you could if you want) but add a bit of sour cream.
