I may be traveling to Osaka and Tokyo soon, but I will be going by myself, so there's no one to split hotel costs with. Do you have any recommendations for good, cheap places to stay in these areas? Thanks!

There is a hotel chain called Toyoko Inn. I stayed there and liked it. It is 6,000 yen or $50.

Depends on what you mean by reasonable. You could stay in a youth hostel or capsule hotel for 3000 yen a night or so. You could find a business hotel starting at about 5000 yen. You could stay at pretty decent chain like the Washington Hotel for 7000 or so.

i went to this really cheap place near the dobutsuenmae (in front of zoo) subway station in osaka. it's about 15 US dollars per night for a 3-tatami size room, which has a TV and air conditioning. they have only one shower room for the entire five floor building and one washroom per floor, and three laundry rooms in the entire building. doesn't look too nice in and out, but basically clean and livable. if you're gonna be out most of the day, you can think of staying here. i left one of the comments on the link.

btw, if ever you decide to stay in one of their 'business hotels' be warned that no one speaks english there. it's an unwritten rule.
