The summer after 10th grade, I worked shoveling horse crap to buy a pair of skis. I ended up buying a Rossignol 9s oversize...it was a year old demo ski when I bought it at Hunter Mountain NY. I'm now a sophomore in college. I volunteered at Windham Mountain with the Adaptive Program 16 days a year and totaled probably 35 days of skiing a season (I'm a church boy...sundays are a nono). I understand the foam core in Rossignosl have a somewhat short lifespan as far as energy goes. I've already noticed a dropoff in power out of turns in these recent seasons Short slolam turns and cruising very important to me. I was wondering if had any experience with this and if I should start demoing some of the new lineups. (Volkl perhaps?......if I had the money)

What I wore last season for skiing for upper body clothing was a white undershirt, a normal t-shirt, a somewhat heavy sweatshirt, and a heavy winter coat. For pants I wore 2 pairs, one that is like fleece, but doesn’t keep you as warm, and one that is a heavier wind pant-type. And for my feet, I just wore like 2 pairs of ankle socks. What I was thinking was to just ditch the undershirt and normal t-shirt, and just buy either a $60 Under Armour Coldgear Blitz Chase Mock Mens performance top (http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2589974&cp=2367827.2629150.2624961.2631197.2631204&parentPage=family&searchId=2631204) or a $50 Under Armour Coldgear Chase Mock Mens performance top (http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2171768&cp=974098&sr=1&origkw=Under+Armour+Coldgear+Chase+Mock+Mens&kw=under+armour+coldgear+chase+mock+mens&parentPage=search&searchId=18458230183). So yeah, any advice is appreciated.

I am 25 and can ski pretty damn good. I was looking at getting snowboard pants and a snowboard jacket rather than ski stuff. I am not into all of the preppy Mountain Hardwear/Northface crap I like the way the Burton stuff looks. I am just wondering will there be a performance difference? I am looking at the Burton Apres jacket and snowboard pants (because they are not nut huggers).

How much exercise do you really get downhill skiing? We ski for about 3 hrs at a time. I don't think it's much (all that lift-riding), but my husband disagrees. My legs feel exercised, but I don't think I get much cardio benefit? Opinions?

The local surplus place has some US Issue Military Skis. These appear to be something akin to an Alpine Touring/Randonee ski. It has a Fritzsche binding that appears it can be locked down for DH skiing. I've seen other (older?) skis that have a telemark binding but none like these before. They also come equipped with climbing skins. The guy at the surplus store thinks they are XC but I know a little more than he does about skis.

Any 10th Mountain Vets (or anyone else) have any idea if I'm right about the skis?

Also...what style boots might have been worn with them? They look like they would hold a plastic mountianeering or a AT boot, but I've never seen US Military Issue plastic mountaineering boots.

I have skied for 3 years now and only done season rentals. I can easily do Blacks without Moguls and can hold my own on Double blacks and am not bad on blacks with moguls. My favorite kind of skiing is the bowls you can hike up to that are very steep and not skied a ton. If I could have ratings on a ski this is what I would want it to look like.
40% Bowls
25% Moguls/Trees
15% Powder
10% Terrain Park
10% Groomed Blues/Black

I was looking at the K2 Apache Recons until someone told me that they might be to stiff
Now I am thinking about the K2 Public Enemy something in the Salomon XWing series or anything else that people can suggest.

Also I would appreciate suggestions on the style of boot I should get. Some people have told me that I should not get a stiff boot but I don’t know if that’s right.

If it makes any difference I am17 years old and very skinny at 6 feet 130LBS. My parents are pretty skinny so I won’t gain tons of weight.

Thanks for the help!!

I would so love to go back to Mt. St. Anne in Quebec. A bunch of us rented a bus once and went and stayed during the Quebec Winter Festival...nothing was more spectaular that the Grand Allee at night with all it's ice sculptures.

I'm not by any means a great skiier having only skiied less than 10 times but skiing down a mountain with 2 feet of snow has got to be the most exciting experience of my life!

Hoping to do that again with my kids one day.

Any one else get the itch to ski come winter time?

I have been ski-ing now 4 times, the first couple of times I felt fine and only had the odd aches & pains that you would expect. However on my recent ski holidays I have had trouble with my calf muscles after the first day of ski-ing & have been unable to walk properly let alone ski. I don't think it's the ski-ing that's to blame I think it's the drag lifts as the most recent places I've been have had more drag lifts than chairlifts. I'm off to Meribel in March 08 and would like to get myself ready so that my calf muscles don't cause me a problem, can anyone recommend any exercises or books I can get or has anyone had the same problem?
